Post Comments Thread For: On Saturday Fight Night, The Show(time)’s The Thing

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It looked like a banner night for HBO boxing.

Though its Saturday card from Montreal was inconveniently (for fans) matched up with a dueling 10 p.m. ET event on Showtime, it seemed the boys from the “Network of Champions” had nonetheless called the driver’s seat as the evening commenced.

Their main event – Chad Dawson vs. Adonis Stevenson – featured the single most-decorated fighter of the weekend, and that match was the only fight on either TV card that had a title belt on the line worthy of actual mention. And as the initial bouts on each broadcast wound their respective ways from borderline interesting to numbingly boring, it wasn’t as if either cable entity was gaining ground.

But it didn’t take much longer for that vibe to change.

Once the shock passed from seeing Stevenson’s left hand collide with Dawson’s skull – and hearing the markedly different interviews that followed (on your knees, Max, really?) – more than sufficient time remained to make the dial switch to catch what quickly became one of the year’s best shows. The headline with Angulo's picture is a bit in poor taste, though the article didn't really tie in the relevancy. Angulo's career is likely over. Even if he comes back, he won't ever be the same. Still Showtime took the play away from HBO and Maidana-Lopez going in was expected to be the fight of the weekend by most who keep up with boxing. HBO's card seemed like is was going to be a bore and actually benefited and overachieved a bit with the thrilling stevenson KO. Still, the slugfest war that was inevitable topped everything that took place that night. Angulo-Lara was much more entertaining than I expected as well. Seeing Lara come back from 2 KD's and break Angulo's face was special no doubt. The sudden shock of seeing a fighter like Angulo suddenly turn his back and quit was only outdone by horror of seeing his eye swell up in sickening fashion. I knew when I saw it that the orbital was likely broken. I watched the fight again and am suprised I hadn't noticed how swollen Angulo's face was before the stoppage the first time around. I skipped the Willie Nelson fight and heard i didn't miss out on much. I wish I had skipped out on the Gamboa snoozefest. Glad the other 3 fights more than made up for it. It was a nice week to be a boxing fan.

Fair enough, but Showtime's PPV event was less than thrilling. Showtime has a lot to make up for. Also, Showtime has a lot of predictable winners. Have they even had a single betting underdog win this year? I know Austin Trout was an underdog when he won last year. On HBO, Stevenson was a slight underdog to beat Chad Dawson.

Stevenson was in shock from the win and was sitting down crying and celebrating. Max crouched down low to interview him.

Showtime wins in my book for the sole fact that I don't have to listen to Jim and Max. Their chemistry, combined with the laconic Andre Ward, makes for a depressing atmosphere. They have huge egos and it always seems like they are giving the audience the hard sell for their fighters (e.g. Gamboa). Let the fighters do the talking.

Paulie, Al, and Mauro ftw. Oh, and Steve Farhood >> Harold Letterman

Al likes to get excited. Al is the guy I would like to see any sports event with and share a beer cause you know he's going to get in the hype, and that's fun.
