Post Comments Thread For: Kessler Retirement? Carl Froch, Andre Ward Hope Not

If their pre-fight comments were to be taken to heart, then retirement was on the table for the losing fighter in Saturday’s rematch between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler.

After 12 fiercely contested rounds, Froch escaped with a well-earned unanimous decision to avenge one of two career losses. The Brit traveled to Denmark for their first fight three years ago, dropping a heartbreaking decision to Kessler in an April ’10 bout many hail as the most entertaining fight of the two-plus year-long Super Six round robin tournament.

Despite the loss and another to Andre Ward in the tournament finals, Froch was viewed as the fresher fighter and the odds-on favorite for Saturday’s rematch.

Article mentions Calzaghe and Kessler fought for the vacant lineal SMW championship. But that's not the case. Joe won the lineal belt when he beat Jeff Lacy.

Not everyone regarded Lacy as for the lineal crown as almost everyone at the time, including Ring, had Kessler rated ahead of Lacy.

Lineal has nothing to do with who is the best. It is who, historically, beat the guy who beat the guy.

That's a terrible faux pas there. Boxing writers who don't know what a lineal championship is? Next will be astronauts who don't know what space is...

The lineage was vacant, and had been for years, before Calzaghe clarified the division. Some people recognized the new lineage at the Lacy win (I'd say most). Others waited until Kessler. Purist wise, Calzaghe-Lacy was 1-3 and Calzaghe-Kessler was 1-2. Either way, same result.

Calzaghe filled the vacant lineage in one of those two.

Lineal is clearly who beat who. That can't be broken or judged.

Sure a lineage can be broken. If a fighter retires, or moves up, etc. a lineage can be broken. Sometimes it gets reset right away because there are clear top guys who jump into the void. Sometimes (a la the gap between Ray Leonard and Bernard Hopkins at 160), it takes a second.
