Post Comments Thread For: Alexander Hungers To Match His Skill Against Mayweather

In February, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) Tweeted that Devon Alexander was the leading candidate to face him on May 4th in Las Vegas. Mayweather ultimately decided to face Robert Guerrero whom he defeated via unanimous decision. Needless to say, the press that Alexander received from the Tweet makes him a leading candidate to face the pound-for-pound king in September. On the latest edition of BoxingScene Radio we asked Alexander if that fight was still at the top of his wish list.

Although Alexander might deserve a shot he wont get one for another calender year at least. This is Paul Williams all over again. A guy with some tools but is just missing that little something that makes him a high TV rating guy.

When Floyd tweeted that he was fighting Devon prior to the Guerrero fight, I actually felt that stylistically, Devon presented more issues than Ghost. I still feel that way. The fight everyone wants is Floyd-Canelo. Stylistically, I think Devon presents more problems than Canelo as well. Of course, Canelo's size and power is a wildcard that on the surface makes him a bigger threat. So that's the fight Floyd should take. But all things considered. If Floyd-Canelo doesn't get made for Sept, Devon is probably the next best option and a fight I would be intrigued to see play out.

His hands broke and he wont be ready by then. Khan is off because of Ramadan. The only one for Floyd to fight is Canelo. The ppv numbers for his fight with the Ghost, hurt Floyd pride. I actually think Floyd will not have the option to cherrypick as much as he would like. I could also see him fighting Pacman within the next two years. And if he fights Devon and flops on ppvs, he will be desperate to fight someone like an Old Martinez, because he is the only one who can produce numbers. Martinez, Pac, Canelo, and Lucas IF he beats Danny, and beats Madaina. That match up will be huge for argentenian fans, and also make him bigger.

Every fight isn't gonna be Chico-Castillo I. The most important fight of the pre-Floyd era was Jones-Hopkins I, which took place on a Riddick Bowe undercard and was one of the most boring costest in my time as a fight fan. But ultimately, it determined who was the best fighter of that era. Floyd-Devon won't have that level of historical significance. But its a very solid welterweight fight.
