Default How to build and maintain muscle whilst boxing???

Ok so I am starting boxing and although I may fight in the future, my sole aim is to put on muscle and have a toned but bulky physique. I really enjoy boxing but just want to get bigger but don't fancy just going to a bog standard gym. I know you may say it is counter productive to my boxing ability but I don't mind. I just want to have a body, for example (and sorry if this is a bit stereotypical) like Tysons.

My question is how do I build muscle whilst boxing, obviously I will include heavy weight training into the program. But because of all of the cardio that I will be doing how do I bulk up, do I eat like a horse?

Another question is if I do chest and triceps today and want to box tomorrow, I will not be resting the muscles like is advised, or is this ok? Also should I do the weight before or after the cardio?

This is my first post so please be easy on me and answers will be much appreciated, also if you have a weekly workout program I could follow would be very beneficial

I am by no means a nutrition or physical fitness expert but one thing that is going to be important is maintaining a good clean diet where you can do that much activity and still be able to build muscle without putting too much fat on. I know a lot of body builders will put on a lot of weight also with fat then cut down before competition. However I'm assuming that you are trying to avoid something like that correct?

My goal is to bulk in size and if that means putting on body fat at the same time I am not to fussed as I could do what a body builder does and have a bulking and then cutting period. I am just concerned with all of the cardio how will I bulk up. But I love boxing so I want to continue with it

If you want to get big you have to lift heavy weights have good nutrition and REST. After a hard core workout I just can't see with the soreness how you can do boxing cardio workouts on the 2 days after a workout. One is going to strip you and one is going to build you.

How come you get big muscly boxers then, like Tyson, Haye, Holyfield etc etc? What do they do?

Eat complex carbs and lots of them.

for the rest:

- weight before cardio
- you don't build significant muscle while boxing. At best you can try to preserve muscle. Perhaps a post work out shake (quick carbs) after boxing would be good aswell to preserve muscle...
- Find out what bodytype you are: mesomorph, ectomorph, endomorph. Google it. Use the result of this to see how you can bulk up.

You will have to spend many hours in the gym to be honest to bulk up. So you are going to get used to it if you are really as ambitious as you say you are. In general eating lots of complex carbs and protein + heavy compound exercises + calory surplus will make you gain weight. There is a lot of information about this subject on the internet tbh.

good luck.

Genetics is a big factor ,they are big guys to begin with and ALL 3 of the boxers mentioned have been suspected of taking PEDs. Steroids and HGH really helps put on the mass. With steroids in 3 months you will see the same gains a clean lifter will get in a year.

How big are you now? How big do you want to be? And I know you said you aren't competing but when you gain some size you are gonna lose some speed and I've noticed its harder for me to get punches off when I want but I put on more fat than anything and am also in poor shape considering what I used to be

you cant be a bodybuilder and a boxer anymore than you can be a bodybuilder and a gymnast. pick one and focus on that or you will just suck at both.

if you want to fight you are gonna have to take it seriously. doing what you are doing you will end up knocked out cold. ive seen so many muscle bound bums in novice tournaments and they all end up that way.

trying to be a bodybuilder and a fighter is the worst possible idea. just buy a heavybag and go a few rounds when you feel like it. real boxing will take real dedication.
