Would Andre Ward be a PPV attraction if the Super Six was on HBO?

No........he won't leave Cali. He is also too "plain" and humble...it's the guys like Mayweather and Broner that sell good in America if they are African American. Ward is too passive, he doesn't talk enough trash or brag enough to be that popular.

HBO doesn't do that tourney stuff...that's a Showtime thing. The Super 6 had me so hyped in the beginning but by the end, I thought the entire thing was more of a disaster than a success. You had dudes dropping out, other subpar replacements came in to only fight certain people and one person didn't even play by the tourney rules. After the 2 year ordeal, it felt drawn out and broken.....like we were lucky the whole thing even made it to through to the end.

He needs to fight a superstar. Nobody in the Super Six would have made Ward a megastar.

Floyd and Pac became PPV megastars after they fought Oscar. Hell, even Hopkins fights were on PPV after he fought Oscar.

He better hope Chavez Jr. gets his **** together. That's the only guy I see around Ward's weight class that can maybe get him to that level.

No he knocked out the light heavyweight champion on HBO and it didn't make a difference. Like they said above he needs to beat a superstar. Or become an exciting character.

Nope. He doesn't have the name opponents or Iconic fighters in or around his weight division that are recognizable to the casual American boxing fan, that would help expose him to the masses and build up his drawing power. (like Pac, Mayweather & De La Hoya ALL had the luxury of having).

Combine that factor with his incredibly UNaesthetically pleasing style and you have a fighter that will lkely never draw to the point where he'll be featured on PPV... as a headliner anyway.

He does draw well in Oakland though. Averages about 10,000 attendance per outing. If he wants to maximize his drawing power he needs to fight more in Oakland.

And i can Guarantee you, if Ward was just about any other nationality, with his accomplishments being what they are (Olympic Gold Medalist, complete dominance over just about every top fighter in his weightclass etc. etc. etc.) He would be one of the biggest sports stars in whatever NON-American country he hailed from. But he was unfortunately born in a country that sets the bar almost unattainably high for it's elite athletes.

I agree with almost everything you say. but it's not that America set it's standards high for elite athletes.. it's that Ward is in the wrong era.


The rest of the world has seen a rise in boxing popurality.

America has seen a decline.

If Andre Ward was in the 80's... and marketed right.. we will see him talked about in the mainstream a lot more.

ESPECIALLY if he had fought at LHW or MW.. against the likes of Hagler or Spinks.

Style has nothing to do with it; people say Floyd is boring; Holyfield wasn't a trash talker but sold a bunch of PPV's. There is nobody in his weightclass that he could fight on PPV besides maybe B-Hop and that won't happen.
