Notre Dame has won eight wire service (AP or Coaches') national championships, second most ever in the post-1936 poll era.[30]
Notre Dame claims national championships in an additional three seasons before the major poll era, for a total of 11. Notre Dame, however, is often credited with 13 consensus national championships in total. The 1938 and 1953 seasons are part of the reason for the discrepancy. The NCAA does not list 1953 and 1938 but does recognize 1919 and 1964, making Notre Dame a national champion selection in thirteen seasons: 1919, 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1964, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988.[32]
Notre Dame has been voted national champion by at least one selector in an additional eight seasons: 1920, 1927, 1938, 1953, 1967, 1970, 1989, 1993.[33]
