He unified the titles and didn't just beat, but pretty much completely dominated everybody put before him, the holmes win is underrated. He smashed Pinklon Thomas, took Biggs apart, smashed berbick, destroyed spinks, beat Tucker (who is very underrated these days). He ruled for a short period but was completely dominant in that period. His H2H ATG rating is far above his achievements rating because people who watch him when he was at his peak can do little but say f uck this guy is incredible.

what upset most people was that holyfeild was getting a title shot after only 11 pro fights and only 8 of those fights at cruiser, no matter how well he did at the olypics, the public thought it was a bad idea and thought evander was being thrown in too fast.

he was 5'7"!

when he won the light-heavyweight title he was thought of as a blown up light-heavyweight.

if he was a middleweight they'd have called him a blown up middleweight.
the only other 5'7" lightheavy weight titlest was montel griffin who was called a blown ltheavy even thought he fought in that division even as an Amateur.

yes thats true, but only after seeing how grossly out of shape he had gotten in the year after his defeat of mike tyson where he wasn't allowed to defend the title cause don king kept him in court.

maybe your right and it was closer than i remember before the weight in but no one expected that right hand ko.

And Holyfield rose to the occasion with a spectacular performance. It was him that brought credibility to the division. And because of its shallow roots, nobody protested Holy getting the opportunity. It's not like there were great contenders getting passed over.

You can't go only by height. Otherwise you couldn't explain why Tyson was a genuine heavyweight and Paul Williams could make 154 years into his career. Qwai probably hadn't been 160 since he was 13. He had a very thick torso and likely struggled to make 175.

Holyfield was always the betting favorite in this fight. And it happened the same year that Buster KO'd Tyson. But of course his shabby conditioning was a factor in the fight itself. The Douglas who fought Tyson would probably have beaten the count after that knockdown.

Tyson doesn't belong in the top ten, for the sole fact that he NEVER, in his entire career, defeated a Tier 1 fighter.

All the big names he beat were way past his prime. Yes, he beat Berbick (who beat Ali), but Berbick was 5 years past his prime and so was Ali.

To be fair, Tyson would probably make the top 20.
He dominated a "period", not era.

blasphemous thread

tyson was bigger than boxing ... boxing needed tyson more than tyson needed boxing, at the end anyway

him becoming the first to consolidate all of the different titles before anyone else, when they were all scattered and held by different men, is enough of an achievement to be considered an ATG

never mind the unmatched skill, power, speed, athleticism, talent etc.

mike was the first and last to conquer all of the belts and titles (in the modern era of the 3 major titles and the lineal title) and become the true undisputed heavyweight champion of the world ... to this day no one has done that ... you'd think Holmes, a guy who is HIGHLY rated on here whom Tyson demolished would've been able to do that ... especially when fighting in the weakest division next to today's

youngest heavyweight champion ever at 20 and undisputed champion at 22? Our current champ Wlad was getting KTFO by a journeyman at that age

There aren't 10 Heavyweights in the history of the sport that you can definitively say have had greater career acheivements, a greater resume and have been more dominant over top Heavyweights than Tyson.

There. That was easy.

And the Tyson hasn't fought anybody crowd seriously needs to lurk moar.

Do your research on some of the fighters Tyson beat during his championship run and you'll see that alot of the fighters he beat had proven, world class pedigrees. And if you look up old Ring/KO magazine and Boxing illustrated articles from the pre-Tyson era, you'll get a glimpse at how highly guys like Pinklon Thomas, Carl Wiliams etc. thought of before Tyson burst onto the scene.

Or better yet, just look at Film of guys like Thomas, "the Truth", Tucker etc. (in their non-Tyson fights) and if you understand what you're watching, you'll see that there hasn't been boxers in the Heavyweight division that possessed the degree of talent & skillset that some of these fighters had since that era has come & gone.

And Tyson walked thru damn there all of them without barely breaking a sweat.

Hey BST, this thread pops up every 2 weeks, is there a library to refer people to? I now that young boxing fans think Tyson was the "end it all" freak monster that wants to eat children but it gets old! He fought no bdy on the way up just like all other prospects do but when he stepped up he got beat! He actually quit against Evander. Enough said the guy was terrific as a young kid but as a mature fighter he wasn't that good!
Am I defending him? Or just telling the facts! Ray

And on the other hand, when Tyson was younger than Wladimir is now he was quitting in his corner to a guy who wasn't good enough to even spar with Klitschko.
