I thought this was just some dumb thing in movies

but no, reading up on it, it is apparently common for young men to engage in homosexual behaviours such as writing on each others buttocks and spanking themselves with paddles, and inserting their thumbs into each others anus's

If you are talking about Fraternity hazing, then each fraternity is different. Most of the fraternities atleast at a college level from what I know at personal experience, do not require you to do any gay things to join, that is just a myth. However, you are required to go through a certain "education" process which varies from fraternity to fraternity. This is done in order for the new pledge classes to bond and form a brotherhood relationship with one another. Think about it more in terms of military boot camp more than anything else.
