Wrestling and jiu jitsu are slightly different worlds with different emphasis.
Its 1 thing to get on top of a guy even with no previous experience which would be excellent if it were wrestling but in jiu jitsu there are some who would prefer it that way. Also you didnt exactly do anything with your dominant position other than stay there. Its possible the guy was either waiting on you to make a move which would create openings to counter. Or he could have been aware of the fact that since you have no previous experience he was never really in any danger and may have just been resting down there. |

The guy definitely doesn't suck, he's from Brazil and is undefeated in his pro career. I think he's like 8-0 or something like that.
I don't mean any disrespect by this but I think natural strength matters a lot in MMA, more so than boxing. He told me afterwards I was one of the strongest guys he's wrestled with and I would have made an excellent ju-jitsu guy. I'm not bragging believe me, he was 30lbs lighter and I know that the guy who is headlining the card who is also there, who weighs 190lbs like me would have killed me on the ground. I just think my natural strength really helped me in this situation. He arm barred me like 5 times and I just picked him completely off the ground. He had me in a hold with his legs (sorry don't know the name of the moves) and I just over powered out of them most of the time. It was towards the end that I got really tired and I'm in pretty good shape from boxing. Finally he got me in some sideways choke and I was about to tap but the bell rang. He wanted to go another round but I was spent.... Like I said, it was really fun and I have massive respect for what these guys do. They are teaching me basic moves here and there for street fighting purposes because I literally have zero experience in wrestling or any type of grappling. He also had a karate suit on, a Gi I think you call it and that actually helped me because I would grab it and pick him up by it. I think if he didn't have that on, he would have had an easier time with me. |

I've been training at an mma gym for a few months but i only started bjj this wednesday.
I definitely didn't expect it to be this demanding like you said. I got matched with a short fat guy that was like 260 pounds, while i am like 235. He's a white belt but he has been training bjj for 6 months, while i had only learned a few submissions in the past. We grappled for like 25 minutes, he wasnt that strong but he was heavy. He managed to tap me only once near the end with an armbar. I'm still pretty happy, he could never stay on top of me for long cause i would just flip him over. Looking forward to next wednesday. I'm still sore from this week. ![]() |

Also he could very well be playing with you, and thus waited right til the end. I have seen it in a lot of martial arts class, most just play around and that's just the MA ethics. Not always the case in boxing, but sometimes. |

Once I got tired though, it was harder and harder to fight off the submissions and I got caught right at the very end of the second round. The other guy who was there who is a 190lb guy and a pro, would have killed me. There's no way I would have had a chance against him. His name is Marcelo, he's fighting in some Belatore card in Virginia but they are training here in S. Florida for the fight. Like I said it was fun, I have the utmost respect for those guys and it is really tiring. My legs were weak after we wrestled. |
