Kobe entered the league as #8. He became famous wearing #8. He scored 81 points as #8. He won his first title as #8. He won 3 titles wearing #8.

However, Kobe won his MVP and Finals MVPs as #24. He won 5 titles as #24. He broke Kareem's NBA scoring record as #24.

I think it makes the most sense to retire both. Might as well retire them both no one has worn 8 since Kobe changed it.
