Post Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Does One Round Require a Rematch?

by David P. Greisman - There is no column in the statistics set aside for moral victories. That doesn’t change the reality of such a result. Sometimes a fighter indeed will win in the way that he lost, much in the same way a boxer can lose in the way he won.

What matters most are the circumstances of the story and how well they sell a sequel.

It’s not just true in the realm of fictional fisticuffs, when Rocky Balboa made the most of losing to Apollo Creed and Sylvester Stallone made the most money possible afterward because of it.

It’s also true in this occasionally unreal world of the Sweet Science, in which Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. can lose all but the last of 12 rounds with Sergio Martinez — and in which Martinez can dominate Chavez for 11 rounds but barely escape the victory — and both can come out looking optimistically toward what’s next.

There will be imperfect comparisons to similar scenarios, such as how Librado Andrade had pursued Lucian Bute for 11, pummeled him in the 12th and then floored him in the final seconds, only for Bute to survive controversially with the decision victory. And there will be other comparisons that are reminiscent but in which the roles are reversed, such as how Billy Conn was beating heavyweight champion Joe Louis through 12 but got knocked out in the 13th, and how Chavez’s namesake father had famously and dramatically come from behind to stop Meldrick Taylor in the final seconds of the final round. No need for a rematch unless it's for another payday for Sergio.

If Martinez goes on to fight this bum again, I will have to say that he is ducking the top guys in his division. He says its for a payday but it's lies. He wants nothing to do with GGG or Pirog, or even Geale. So he wants a big money to beat up this bum again? Don't be like that Sergio. Fight the best.

If he wants to prove he's legit he should fight GGG, or Pirog. Guys that can actually move and have a jab. Not like Bum ass Chavez who is a punching bag and is one punch away from being a vegetable.

Well people were calling for Dirrell-Abraham rematch because he came on late and got DQ'd.

Martinez didnt just get the round stolen but he was damn near out on his feet. So a rematch imo is fine. I think the first fight was boring watching Sergio run around flicking jabs and Chavez not punching. Junior now knows he can hurt him and hurt him bad so he will fight different.

Now Martinez also found that out so he might try catch Junior like how he caught P-Will or he might get on his bike and get stopped like Cotto/Marg 1.

One thing we know for sure is that Martinez cant let it go to the cards with Arum HOPING for a third fight so maybe he comes out and tries to take Juniors head off like he said would in the first fight. So for me fucc it why not?

I could see the POV that Martinez is picking on Junior for an easy payday. I could see it both ways.

Why the hell would anybody wana see this rematch? Just because jr hurt Martinez in the last round we are supposed to erase and forget about the first 11 rounds where Martinez dominated him fairly easy? Even thinking about a rematch would make you pathetic. If chavez held his own throughout the fight and atleast won some rounds then I would consider it but he won zero rounds from 11 down and was outboxed, outclassed and gave a pathetic effort in those rounds.

you don't even know what out on his feet means, the KD happened with over a minute and half to go in the round and Martinez was trading shots with Chavez jr.

now if Chavez Jr couldn't do **** to an "out on his feet" and crippled Martinez why would anybody think he would do anything in a rematch
