Post Comments Thread For: Chavez Jr. is Ready To Carve Out His Own Identity

By Jake Donovan - For years, the term its not what you know but who you know applied to the career of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

The son of the Mexicos most famous and arguably greatest fighter ever was viewed as living the pampered life as he was matched soft on the way up the ranks. Even to this day, hes viewed as a soft fighter who trains on his own terms.

Who he knows helped him arrive to this point. Come September 15, the degree of his success will depend entirely upon what he knows or doesnt know when he faces lineal middleweight king Sergio Martinez at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

That the venue has completely sold out on tickets is a testament to Chavez Jrs drawing power, having as much to do with who he is as it does with whom he knows. What he knows and continues to learn brings a once-viewed mismatch into discussion as a potentially competitive fight.

Its perhaps the highest compliment paid to Chavez Jrs career, which is approaching nine years in the pro ranks.

I think they saw the dedication and the preparation that I had in the past year, notes Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32KO), who faces his fifth straight Top 10-ranked fighter in a span of 15 months. I noticed improvement and I feel very confident in what I can accomplish. I know how hard it has been working day after day to get to this point and Im not going to disappoint anyone.

There was a time where Chavez Jr. was damned no matter what he accomplished in the ring. Soft matchmaking while appearing in high profile pay-per-view undercard slots certainly didnt help matters any. His handlers including top American promotional outfit, Top Rank had a goal in mind from the moment they became involved in his career; cash in on the popularity while transitioning the fighter from a novice to a top-shelf talent. Martinez isn't an idiot, many here may feel he's over confident but to me that's all mind games, a ploy to make Chavez Jr. feel inferior to him in the ring. If he can make Chavez feel that much smaller, Martinez has a much better real estate to work with in the ring, that in turns allows him to control distance, the pace and take some of the early rounds while adjusting. Thing is, I don't know if he's really made Jr. feel that much smaller. A lot depends on the early rounds, Martinez is gonna have to land some heavy leather and convince Chavez that he can crack, make Chavez, who isn't much of a counter puncher, much more tentative.

Really hard fight to pick, I don't know why people continue to bring up Jr.'s mediocre opposition like that even matters, what we know is that Chavez is huge, durable, strong and attacks the body pretty well. I expect this to be Sergio's toughest fight since Paul Williams I.

especially considering sergio's opposition has been only good these last couple of years

sergio has like 2 noteworthy wins in his entire career

He has good wins over Williams and Pavlik, should also have a win over Cintron, when Cintron was a Top SWW. He also has a solid win over then unbeaten Dzinziruk, and a good win over Macklin.

Chavez has a solid win over Zbik, and some "alright"/"okay" wins over Rubio and Lee.

true but for a supposed p4p guy his resume leaves a lot to be desired

and chavez has a weak resume but that's due to his age if he beats sergio he will have HALF as much noteworthy wins that martinez does

Plenty don't like to acknowledge his win over Dzinziruk, and the consensus here was that Martinez was ducking him. Rubio is underrated in my opinion.
