Post Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Andre Ward: Positively Hopkins-esque

by David P. Greisman - We’d worried that the fight between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson would be Bernard Hopkins-esque.

It was. But not in the way we’d worried.

Ward and Dawson were seen as two boxers who epitomized the name of their profession, focusing more on not getting hit than they do on hitting. Ward, in particular, was seen as proficient in neutralizing what his opponents do best, even if that involved a liberal and unabashed application of grabbing and mauling mixed in with his boxing and punching.

Both had shown themselves to be very good. But being very good at negating can be very bad for those watching.

Ward, though, showed himself to be more than very good. He was great, putting forth a definitive, defining performance, shutting Dawson down, knocking Dawson down and then stopping him. Dawson was dismantled, then dismayed, then defeated.

It was a positively Hopkins-esque performance for Ward, a signature showing. It was beautiful to behold.

It was what Hopkins had done several times before. In many of his most important fights he could demonstrate just how great he was, showing that he indeed knew how to frustrate his foes without frustrating the fans, dissecting opponents who were otherwise capable competitors except on those evenings. What, I wondered, did the WBC have on record for the WBC bout?

Here***8217;s what the sanctioning body had to say:

Chavez Jr., according to a document provided to BoxingScene.com, was 162 pounds as of 7 days out from the Rubio bout, just two pounds over the middleweight limit. He was 169.7 pounds as of 30 days out.
The WBC is lying. I remember Sulaiman was on the Leave it in the Ring show (might have been somewhere else) and he said the weigh ins weren't done and blamed the promoters because it was their job to do it.

I swear, Ward is damn near the mirror image of B-Hop. Technically identical. The 1 major difference is that B-Hop needed to slow the pace down while Ward can slow the pace or make it blisteringly active.

I had never hard of Nick Cannon before the fight. I figured he was one of Ward's buddies or something. He seemed to have no command of the microphone whatsoever. His enunciation was terrible and he put most of his inflections in the wrong places. It was as if he had never even heard a professional announcer in his life, let alone ever addressed a crowd. Now you are telling me he has millions of twitter followers? For what?

Decent article. I like Matthysse a lot. He's a tough bastard and that was a hell of a fight with Ajose. Ajose gained a fan in me that night. His jaw must be made out of granite. I was starting to think he was half Nigerian - half weeble. He'd wobble but would not go down haha. I kept thinking, Matthysse has to be getting frustrated with Ajose taking everything he threw at him and not going down. I'd love to see a rematch if Ajose takes a fight or two in between to get rid of the ring rust. I would never want to see Matthysse vs Khan though and I think Khan would lose that fight by brutal KO. I think he beats Garcia too.

I was never much of a fan of Dawson. I used to be but he just seems like he lacks the drive to fight and I've just lost interest in him. Even though I didn't have much faith in him, when he started landing the right hook on Ward as he jumped in, I had a glimmer of hope of him putting in a half decent performance. I was pretty sure before the fight started that Ward would win but I never thought Ward would make him quit. It was an impressive performance by Andre and wouldn't mind seeing him move up to LHW. Too bad he didn't fight Chad at that weight and take his title from him. It's a big move though and I can understand him not wanting to vacate his SMW titles. Some good fights this past weekend though and I definitely look forward to next weekend.

He's the host of America's Got Talent, married to Mariah Carey and was a singer and comedian for quite awhile before that. I'm a metalhead and don't care for most mainstream tv and music but know who he is only because of my wife. I was surprised to see him doing the introductions and you're right, he didn't sound right as a boxing announcer. He seems like a decent guy but should stick to hosting AGT.
