Post Comments Thread For: Ryan Rhodes Retires From Boxing, A Look at "Spice Boy"

Ryan Rhodes has announced he is hanging up the gloves at the age of 35.

The Sheffield-born boxer, who started out in the famous Wincobank gym alongside Prince Naseem Hamed, has decided to bring the curtain down on his 52-fight professional career after losing to Sergey Rabchenko in June.

Rhodes - nicknamed the 'Spice Boy' - lost just six times in a topsy-turvy career, with three of those defeats coming when challenging for the world title.

As a light-middleweight, Rhodes became the youngest post-war holder of a British belt when he defeated fellow Sheffield fighter Paul 'Silky' Jones in just his 10th bout as a pro.

He stepped up to middleweight to challenge Otis Grant for the vacant WBO strap in 1997, only to lose by unanimous decision on the judges' scorecards.

Rhodes again came up just short on the world stage against Gary Lockett nine years later, leading to him dropping back down to light-middle. [Click Here To Read More]

Probably a good call at his age. Always came up a little short on the world stage, but a good fighter nonetheless. Best of luck to him.

Obviously this article will attract loads of "he's sh1t" comments...

He was a very good fighter - just fell short that's all.

Yes, I'd say a good decision! I fancied him to beat Rabchenko but I think that fight told the story, I dont believe Rhodes would have been stopped with that punch if he still had what it takes, he brought alot of entertaining fights to British fans.

Nice guy, good career, Euro champ, just short of World level, hope he can pursue something else in boxing.

Good luck.

Very good european level fighter and he had himself a good career, coming up a little short at the world level.

Good guy too. Hopefully he made enough money to retire comfortably.

He gave a good fight to Canelo and was a good boxer. I still think he should at least tryo to fight for the British title or something; who wants to retire off such a loss?

Thanks for the fights, Ryan!

I dunno man that shot looked seriously nasty! I think Rabchenko looked real good tbh, no shame losing to him. Rhodes has tasted world level so it must be hard to accept the level he will be forced to operate at if he continued. Ryan despite having the gayest nickname in world boxing was a good fighter who had a pretty good career too, he also knocked out one of my all time favourite fighters in one of my all time favourite fights, Jamie Moore!
Good luck in retirement Rhodesy u deserve it

been a spice boy fan from the off and it has to be said, here in england ryan, naseem, robin reid, steve collins, were the bright lights of the late nineties in british boxing, the del bryan ko was ace and a very good attempt at the then excellent otis grant who at the time had only been beaten by the great roy jones jnr, at 16 fights in isnt bad is it?.
was shocked at the kos by jason and lee blundell maybe things were off for ryan but, glad his faculties remain intact at this stage and has achieved something to be very proud of by not only himself but, by everyone who calls himself a ryan rhodes fan.
good luck spice boy.
