29 is young but the back is a sensitive thing man. You have to be real careful when lifting things and straining that part of your body.

I'm in my late 30's and I can't do that type of stuff anymore, not because I'm not in shape but because both my knees are done. My back isn't a problem, it's my knees, shoulder and hands. All from years and years of boxing.

Sitting down in a chair in front of a computer the whole day is not helping me. Lately I've been feeling the back aches more often. I changed my mattress and didnt help at all. I started exercising three time a week and it help me. I have two co-workers in their 30's that been working in the same position for several years and they are going to therapy because of it. Sometimes is just not stressing the muscles what hurt. Sometimes doing nothing it is as bad as doing something.

I'm 28, and I'd probably be feeling like you were. But, I injured my back wrestling when I was 17, and it was never the same again.

More importantly, listen to your body and know your limitations

EDIT: not 30 years old. But just sayin.
Im only 20 but I have dealt with lower back problems before because they run in the family. When I started lifting and focusing on lower backs especially with deadlifts the pains and sore are never there any more.

The biggest problem was when I never really did deadlifts then would do some lifts like shrugs for example I would kill my lower back from doing them because the difference in strength between the two muscles was way too big.

About six months ago I threw out my back and ended up in bed for a week...

I reached over to pick up an oxygen tank that was out of my reach and felt a sharp pain in my lower back, like most men would do I ignored the pain and kept working...the very next day I went to work and still felt a little discomfort.
I ended up bending down to pick up a piece of paper I dropped and couldn't get back up..

The MRI's showed a lumbar muscle strain...which was caused by improper lifting...

A week in bed got me back to normal but I've started to visit my chiropractor at least once a month since that happen and I also started taking a vitamin call Joint Support...
I've been ok since even though once in a while I do get some discomfort in my lower back...

Sometimes I forget I'm getting older and do things I'm not supposed to do but my back always reminds me my age...

I just an MRI and they said one of my discs was a little out, and showed a little arthritis.... Im just wondering, taking all that work I did into consideration, and Im 29.... Would mozt of you feel like I do right now, or would you guys be fine.

Its not like excrutiating, but basically... To bend over and pick something up right now is very uncomfortable.

Its not like that when I have a fresh start on the day, but after I do enough work, Im about done

for a while now, my lower back would act up from time to time...if i do heavy lifting or if im just driving to vegas, i'd get this sharp pain

it wasn't until a couple of years ago after an accident that i got an MRI...i thought it wouldn't show anything and was just doing it for insurance purposes but it revealed that i have a bulging disk in my lower back

the doctor said that he only saw conditions like that from 60yr old construction workers...said that i would be eligible for back surgery (not a good thing)

basically it woke me up and forced me to do a lot more core strengthening exercises and stretching...it still acts up every now and then but not as bad as before

Just a small piece of advice, without going in to too much about my own 20yr + issues with back pain....

Most MRI's are quickly read by a tech who is looking for mostly obvious things. I've had several over the years and they always came back with 'there's a small' this or that, but nothing ever conclusive and never takin too seriously by the doctor reading the 2 sentence report. You should ALWAYS take your MRI (on disk) to a specialist to read (not a chiro).

I finally did that after my last MRI, the usual 2 sentence report finding nothing significant... I went to Mayo Clinic/Hospital and sat with one of the top Dr.s in the world, who sat and went over the MRI with me and showed me everything and explained in detail what I was seeing. Turns out I have DDD/DJD (degenerative disc and joint disease) along with some osteoarthritis. I had several procedures done there (injections) where they have a live exray unit that guides them - and it wasn't until they were doing that, that they also found several herniated discs. And that was just in the thoracic areas.

Moral of the story... don't automatically trust the reports. And personally, I believe doing chiro could possibly be more damaging than it is good. It may have a short term relief for you but it's apt to cause more damage for someone who has issues going on with their back.

Doing yard work shouldn't be giving you that much grief, I mean you have builders in their 40's, 50's, even 60's who would lift more than that.

I think it's either A) your pre existing injuries or B) you aren't lifting properly.

If you lift through your legs, then your legs might ache but your back shouldnt
This is where I fail... I know correct technique to pick things up, but I never do it... I bend over and lift using my lower back... It's like I know Im doing it, and its not good, but later when my back hurts I dont connect the dots... Im gonna be a lot more aware of how i pick things up.

Like I said Im athletic... and it wasnt just yardwork, I did about 5-6 hours of heavy lifting, bending over etc etc... I was spent at the end though.

I probably bent over too much instead of squating with my legs.
