Post Comments Thread For: Nishioka Confident of Victory: I Don't Feel Any Decline

As super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka prepares to square off against Nonito Donaire of the Philippines in a unification title match, the 36-year-old is as psyched up as he's ever been in his storied career.

Nishioka, the WBC champion, will face Donaire, who holds the WBO and IBF titles, at Home Depot Center in Carson, California, on Oct. 13, in a blockbuster match for the lighter weight divisions.

Nishioka last fought in October, but his long wait for another bout is nearly over. Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 KOs) needed 39 fights to earn his first world title in 2008 and defended it seven times before being named an emeritus champion by the WBC in March, and had ardently hoped to fight Donaire (29-1, 18 KO). Good fight though I really do feel Nishioka is there for the taking & appears to of visibly slowed. Hoping he can pull this off & whilst hes still winning against good opposition I am certain his best days are well behind him.

Nishioka has slowed quite a bit, but like Ken Morita said "this is the biggest fight in Japan's history" Nishi's gonna be willing to die to win this fight and Nonito's gonna have to show another side of him that nobody's seen yet if he wants to win. Nishi's best day's are behind him but I think he's gonna give it his all. I think Nishi show's more heart and beats Donaire Oct. 13th.

the biggest fight in Japan's history. Nice hyperbole, but Harada-Jofre I or II would trump. The Canto-Oguma fights were big in their day too. This is a big one for sure, but that's a stretch.

I also think that Donaire-Nishioka will be the biggest fight in Japan's history. Harada-Jofre fight was held in Japan and Harada did not accomplish at 118 at that time. Challenger Harada invited a strong champion to Japan. It is a typical world-title fight held in Japan for decades.

On the other hand, Nishioka is a accomplished champion at 122. He fight P4P fighter in USA and fight will be broadcast to many countries on live. This is a historic fight in Japan's history for sure.

I don't know why so many people are stating that Nishioka has slowed down. I mean, he didn't look great against Marquez, but Marquez is still very good even at this point and I had Nishioka winning clearly despite him not looking like he usually does. I thought he looked better in that fight than Donaire did against both Narvaez and Vazquez Jr. Nishioka is still an excellent boxer. This is the fight I am most looking forward to this year so far. I think it's going to be a really exciting match up and I am expecting Nishioka to win. I just hope that whoever wins, wins decisively and that the judges are fair, and don't rob him of making history.

who cares if he slowed down? You cant expect every single fight between two guys both at the peak of their powers.

It doesnt take away that he's a great boxer at a high level and this fight will be a fire fight (while it lasts)

although i wont be surprised if it goes the distance and will be a classic

Harada-Jofre was two all-time greats (not that we knew that about Harada yet) in a fight with global attention and, yes, happening in Japan makes it bigger. Time ebbs away impact sometimes (try explaining to someone why something like Gavilan-Davey was a bigger fight in its time than any Mayweather fight now and it's hard to explain without understanding audience reach).

This is big for today. Ever? Lot of history behind us.
