Post Comments Thread For: Team USA: Failure Before Success?

by Cliff Rold - When the final bell rang, when Welterweight Errol Spence saw his second chance end the same as his first, the U.S. Menís Olympic boxing team had nothing left but the stamps in their passports.

Sure, there were those who could feel the scoring hadnít gone their way. Bantamweight Joseph Diaz Jr. can wonder what happened to all the punches he landed in the second round of his fight against the Cuban. Middleweight Terrell Gausha can still scratch his head at what the judges were watching in the second and third rounds of his elimination against Indiaís Vijender Singh. And Teddy Atlas opined on the air he felt Spence had landed the most shots in all three of his rounds against Russiaís Andrey Zamkovoy. [Click Here To Read More]

Helpful review. This is your (re: Cliff) second article on the topic, though, when you haven't touched on any of the more talented boxers in these Olympics. Why the focus on only one national team? There are better prospects from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the UK, and especially Ukraine. You should do a review on professional prospects from the Olympics, without concern for national allegiance.

The focus is based on being an American writing for an American website. This is my last piece on the Olympians as we get back to pro action in the next few days. Someone else out there will have to dig into the rest of the global headgear scene.

This team certainly looked more talented than the 2008 team but fell short, way short of anything positive. I'm sure a few talented fighters will come from the bunch. For example the 2008 team with Andrade, who is going to be a force in a few years. Everyone though Warren was going to be great but I'm not sure but the Olympics is a bad indicator of who is going to do well as a pro. Look at Russell for example. He's special as hell but failed to keep clean and be on the team in 2008.

Some of the more talented U.S Olympians will have losses on their records right off the gate. http://www.maxboxing.com/news/max-bo...oxing-fighters

Which might scare off promoters. Since with a few losses it could be hard to market them.

Myself and the team just read this article. Though everyone is entitled to their opinion we feel as if people take away credit from what we actually had to go through just to make this team. I myself am still disappointed with my performance truthfully but unlike most other countries we had little international experience and I could never really adjust to most of these hit and run tactics but like I said before he was just the better man that day. Everyone is quick to down the Olympic team but once somebody who's decent from America comes up in the pro ranks with a good or decent record that was DEFEATED by an American Olympian he doesn't get criticized as much and sometimes gets more praised then what we've gotten but it's ok in the end people are going to talk we just have to rebuild and prove them wrong.

Wasn't meant at all to disparage. I'm rooting for all of you to do big things and saw a lot of good from the team. Best of luck. Win or lose, I always look forward to seeing the U.S. Team at the Games.

Russell made the team and missed weight. He was one our strongest medal candidates in 08 and he is going to be a beast at full pro stride.

Thanks that really means a lot to us. Believe me it hurt us ALL to go out the games like that but we want to make our country proud at the next level.

Not sure who I'm responding to here but take this for what it's worth:

You made your country proud at THIS level. Herring has worn this country's colors on two planes; that's a role model for anyone. Gausha and Spence could easily have been in the medal rounds; just didn't work out. All of you won or lost with honest efforts and have the stones to be in the ring.

There's more to life than medals, but I hope there are at least nine belts and paydays waiting to make life easier.
