Post Comments Thread For: Olympics Middleweight Round of 16: USA's Last Hope

By Jake Donovan - Errol Spence could prove to be a sight for sore eyes. The American welterweight is the last fighter to post a win for Team USA in the 2012 London Games, way back when he dominated Brazilís Myke Carvalho in a 16-8 win to advance him to Round of 16 competition.

The win was par for the course at the time, giving Team USA its fourth victory in as many fights. Eight straight losses have followed, as Spence is the last remaining male member of the squad who has actually won a fight this year. He is also the last male fighter in the competition for the U.S., as Rau'shee Warren bowed out earlier in the evening. [Click Here To Read More]

Oh my days, Americans have had an absolute shocker in the Boxing. To be fair i'm English and was cherring for the Indian lad, but that was a shocking decision. Errol Spence was all over him in the third and considering the Indian fighter had just a 1 point advantage it should have been a clear win. The referee even lifted the Americans hand thinking he had won and was shocked when he heard red corner. I genuinely think the Indian fighter did not relaise he won, because as soon as the ref raised Spence's hand the Indian fighter congratualted him and walked out of the ring shaking his head.

errol spence got fcking robbed. kid was crying afterwards, gave me flashbacks of RJJ in korea.

not only was the decision terrible but the ring ref was terrible too, the indian was holding, spitting out his mouthpiece etc and got away with it completely. dude did nothing but hold in the last round and the ref didnt do sht. on top of that some judges had the indian winning the last round.

i thougth the american had it by 3-4 points. alot of his punches were being blocked especially early but he landed alot too and clearly won.

Let's face it, America has a crappy amateur boxing program compared to other (Cuban and European) countries. We don't place emphasis on international amateur experience and expect relative babies to deal with purpose built semi pros. We would rather pay per view Canelo than show interest in an amateur tournament. That and some questionable officiating has led to this dissaster.

Another bad decision, I wouldnt go as bad as RJJ but bad never the less. The ref even lifted Errols hand! He obviously though he won and hes the closest man to the action.

again spence should not have been out there fighting like a pro. That clearly doesn't get rewarded in the amateurs, when will these guys learn.

My point exactly. There is no amateur program, in the Olympic sense, in America. Everything is geared for the pros and making money in America. We need reform, rebirth might be best. A team designed from scratch, but not all new people, just purpose built. Win Olympic gold. Promote amateur tournaments in search of talent and proving grounds. Get the Ad people working on individual PR and turn our amateurs into national heros before the Olympics. We can do better than this. We can't do any worse.
