Post Comments Thread For: Mendez-Honorio Early Results: Guzman Scores 1st Rd KO

By Jake Donovan - Argenis Mendez and Martin Honorio prepare for their rematch this evening at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Mendez eked out a majority decision in their May '10 battle, which led to an eventual vacant title shot against Juan Carlos Salgado. The title fight didn't go as well, losing a split decision on the road in Mexico despite dominating the back half of the fight and scoring a knockdown in the final round.

Honorio punched his way back into contention with a split decision win over Fahsai Sakkreerin last December. The veteran held his own against Salgado earlier this year, but fell just short in dropping a majority decision in his last fight.

The rematch airs live on Telefutura's Solo Boxeo series. The televised co-feature pits rising welterweight contender Ed Paredes against battered former 140 lb. titlist Vivian Harris. [Click Here To Read More]

The real question is, who's gonna give him the opportunity?

That was the problem of Guzman, throughout his career ... Precisely for lack of a large public tracker. The top of each division to which he belonged would flee because his style and skills will represent too much risk for a gain that could not be very lucrative.

You think he was robbed first time? I scored it to Salgado by 4 points, Mendez pretty much took first 7 rounds off. He showed he's better fighter of the two, but Salgados workman like approach won his the fight in my eyes.

Totally agree with you on this one, sir. No one wanted to risk it back then, and no one logically wants to risk it now. Joan, aside from having made gross mistakes in his career, came into the sport with the very bad luck of not being appealing to the masses. Charisma is something that you either have or not in you. Guzman is charismatic in terms of talent and skill, but not in market appeal. A pity. It's going to be extremely hard for Acquinity to actually make some bucks out of Joan's career at this point. But, hope is the last thing we lose.

Eventually he will fight with the big names at 140 division although we can agree that his last 3 opponents are not of much quality but it shows the ability that Guzman still posses which is why many still avoid Guzman.

Robbed nowadays gets thrown around way too much i seen it recently with what i had read on boxing websites about this site and it was close but Mendez took it if its outside of Mexico Mendez would have won.
