Post Comments Thread For: Benavidez: Hands Intact, Returns in Eight-Rounder 7/21

Almost two weeks after his 20th birthday, junior welterweight prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. unwrapped the best gift of all last Saturday following his unanimous decision win over Josh Sosa on Azteca America—a pair of healthy hands.

Benavidez is a great prospect. He fights like Mikey García. Calm, cautious, but a destroyer of souls.

Not impressed. Obviously he and his team have little confidence against quality opposition. He fights either guys who don't have winning records or lost their last 2 fights. I'd rather watch fighters with courage like the Cubans who fight other undefeated fighters and unbeatens vs unbeatens like on ShowBox. Right now he is a farce facing setups/no hopers/hapless opponents while other fighters with 10-0, 13-0, 18-0 fighters take risks facing other unbeatens on ShowBox.

Destroyer of losing record fighters. They have already been destroyed before he came along. They won't put him in against anything with a pulse because they don't want their money pot to get harmed.

Do you watch boxing? All fighters do this when they're young. Benavidez turned pro when he was 17 so he's naturally going to have more fights before he steps up in class.

benavidez is only 20 years old i think with less than 20 pro fights..so no need to rush him into fighting any of the top guys. but i agree that he should be stepping up his competition a little bit more.

Wrong. He had no problem fighting TWO 27 year old fighters as long as they had losing records which proves it's not about age. And many 20, 21, and 22 year old unbeaten fighters are fighting each other on ShoBox. He is overprotected. Watch Boxing? Been involved with it for over 25 years, probably before you were born.

It's not about the age of his opponents. It takes time to develop fighters. This guy just turned 20 a week ago. He'll be on ShoBox by the time he's 21 or 22. The kid is barely fighting his first 8 rounder in July.

Top Rank knows how to build guys up. They know exactly what they're doing with Benavidez. He's being moved along fine.

Lol stop hating, dude is barely 20. If you want him to step up already, you should just ignore him for a couple of years. Obviously they're not ready, and his trainer even acknowledges that. You act like they're trying to get away with murder.lol. Cubans are good too, can't knock them, they come here as veterans in the boxing game, sometimes literally since sum of them come to the states late in their careers age 25 and up.

I'm not sold on him either, looks like they're getting it together though.

If he can't do what hundreds of ShowBox fighters do, then he is being overprotected like David Lemiuex was and will suffer from fighting setups when he goes from the shallow pond to the deep waters with nothing in between.
