Post Comments Thread For: The Super Six Tournament: The Halo Effect

By Cliff Rold - With the tournament unfolding commensurate with the stilted pace of modern boxing, stars fighting twice a year at maximum with ample injury delays and cancellations to go around, it was hard for some not to view the “Super Six” Super Middleweight tournament as disappointing.

It’s fair to say it was less than the initial components hinted it could be.

It is unfair to say it was not a success.

By the time it was over, three undefeated fighters weren’t anymore, a super talent was fulfilled, and fans were treated to some memorable battles and moments. Rather than debate among pundits and on the internet about who could do what, fans got real answers about all of the participants and real quality matches throughout.

What is developing now is the halo effect of the lengthy endeavor. A halo effect is felt in boxing when a centerpiece casts an angelic shine bright enough to light beyond its reach, illuminating future events. It is often felt on the basis of one critical fighter, a figure whose star shines so bright he can make both his opponents, and his opponent’s opponents, bigger. [Click Here To Read More]

I would love to see Abraham vs. Kessler after he beats Stieglitz!
Abraham vs. Direll 2 would also be great. Direll is somehow out of the picture since hes out of the super 6.

Dirrell could be potentially better than all of them. He needs to get off his butt and make something of his career.

Maybe being around Floyd's training camp will get his mind right.

The tournament was great and pitted most of the top fighters from the SMW division against each other.

Many cracking fights and a tremendous fighter in Andre Ward was discovered.

Froch was right when he said that if it wasn't for the S6 then the best would have never fought the best.

Something that we see all too often in all the other divisions with promoters keeping the best fighters away from each other far too often.

It was nothing other than a success. No way would those fights have happend if it was wasnt for the tourny. 1 or two may have been made but super 6 brought us great fights.

Early on the points system made for great discussion until it became clear Ward was the one being lined up to win and got every fight at home. We had a load of pull outs which was disapointing plus the delays but eventually we got what we asked for which was a recognised best and Ward was the last man standing. Boxing Monthly rank Bute number 1 in the divison despite Ward proving he is the best so it hasnt answered all the questions and we are back to where we started 4 guys claiming to be the best, Kesssler, Ward, Bute and Froch.

Unfortunately, Floyd's camp is probably a bad place to get his mind right. It's too calculating in there with boxers waiting for the right moment to emerge for the right money and right fight. There might never be a right moment for Dirrell.

I agree that it was a success. However, Ward clearly emerged as the best in my view with Bute' having a minor claim that was weakened because of the tournament. The format of the tournament obliterated the triangle theories and oral arguments of who is the best. In the round robin only the best emerged to fight in the knockout round. Bute now has to climb the ladder in order to prove his claim. Glen Johnson and Carl Froch are just steps to the throne of Andre Ward.

Dirrell is so talented, but he has no heart. He wants to look pretty in an ugly sport - not going to happen. He needs some balls, period. In the Abraham fight, he was winning, but Abraham had no respect for him whatsoever. He needs to hold his ground sometimes & make these cats respect him as a fighter. Until then, he's wasted potential.

Yeah, Floyd's camp is not where he should be, but he looks up to Floyd (guess it's a Michigan thing). Bute didn't put his hat in the ring for the S6 - I figure it's because he wanted to let everyone beat each other up & then prey on the ones he feel has been weakened in the battles, like Froch. Bute better be on his game, because Froch whether he's worse for wear or not will be coming right at him all night....
