Joe, how long do iron workers usually last? I can't imagine that many 60 year olds doing it.

i worked as an electricians apprentice during college

the average union electrician lived seven years after he retired. seven.
this was in the mid 2000's, too. minumum wage in my state was probably 6 or 7 dollars and i was making 20. it was brutal work.

it's insanely hard on your body, especially if you're in an industrial or commercial setting

i was in monster shape and in my early 20's and it burned me out.

also, 40 dollars an hour is around 80 k a year if you work 40 hours each week.

also, the electricians i worked for who were in the local union were reguarly subject to strings of weeks here and there where they wouldnt have any work. they would "collect" (ie collect unemployment.)
the electricians union was one of the only unions at the time that covered their health insurance after they were laid off.

the trades are a great way to make money if you dont mind the physical nature of work. you cant do it forever, and that's because it physically breaks you down.
personally i'd try and put in no more than five years as a journeyman and try and make my own way as a business owner
if you offer a competative price and good service and you can get the business you have almost unlimited potential.

Yeah, I guess you're right about the breakdown of cash. I guess I don't even need that since I made under 60,000 and still lived very nicely(single guy).

Speaking of electricians though. I was going through jobs at the school I was going to and they were hiring some at 33 dollars an hour. 33 dollars an hour right out of school, no experience is pretty good.

Yikes! See that's the sh1t that would worry me. Not only is it dangerous but it's probably hot as fuk and probably uncomfortable. Not to mention the heights that Joe probably works at.
