some credit goes to miguel cotto. he's a terrific boxer in his own right. obviously, as you alluded to, floyd was touched up a bit. that's obviously nothing to scoff at, but when he's on the mark he's had some performances where he's been hardly hit, and certainly not with anything of real consequence. his timing did look off. worse than i had expected, given how active he has been. he wasnt a ring general on the level that we are used to seeing. i refuse to believe that he intended to lay on the ropes, even if he was able to get the better of some of the stretches where he was forced there by cotto. i thought his legs looked to be showing the signs of deterioration that you would expect from a fleet fighter entering the latter half of his 30's now, that being said, he was letting his hands go in twos and sometimes even threes. maybe he was serious about trying to provide more excitement, or there was at least some level of truth i that statement. he gave cotto lots of praise following the fight, alluded indirectly and very briefly to retirement, etc. all circumstantial, but it's a sign that floyd felt that it was one of his hardest fights. and again, you dont need me to tell you, he's quite often looking like his opponent doesnt belong in the ring with him at the end of the fight cotto looked like he belonged in there with mayweather and with pacquiao, after the 5th round, he really didnt. now, styles make fights, and pacquiao is a brute what's my opinion on the best way to beat miguel cotto? hit him on the chin and see if he can take your gas. dont box with him. hurt him. he can be hurt and it will change his outlook on the fight and the way he is boxing. maybe the 154 lb limit gave cotto some ability to take damage that he didnt have against pacquiao when he was at 145 (catchweight for a ww strap, right? it all blends together and i dont want to check on the boxrec )obviously pacquiao's better suited for walking into the ring to take somebody's soul |

I don't care what The Ring does with a mythical based ranking.
What bothers me more is that they want to give more integrity to a title that doesn't really exist in their P4P concept. Than the actual divisional title. Really they will have their P4P 1 vacant. But, yet would change the rules to fulfill their vacancy divisional titles. Because, they have too many divisional ring titles vacant. It just makes no sense. |

On one hand Oscar and Cotto have been Mayweather's toughest fight since Castillo 1 (where he was facing a 10lbs disadvantage), on the other hand they were tought in completely different manners. TBH while I do not buy today's claim that Mayweather stood his ground to give the fans what they wanted, I have always been convinced that he did deliberately less than he could against Oscar, because he saw the money in a rematch (which he exceptionally mentioned in the postfight interview). Oh well who cares. Let's see him fight again. The fights are actually getting better as he gets worse. |
