by David P. Greisman - Let’s get this out of the way first: Sergio Martinez looked good when he needed to look good — but what wasn’t so good is when he needed to.

The best fighters are able to do what Martinez did Saturday night. Pick a cliché, and he did it: He dug deep, turned it up a notch, came from behind, and did exactly what he needed to do to come out with the win.

The best fighters shouldn’t have to do what Martinez had to do.

This is the armchair analysis that ensues after every performance, particularly when a favored fighter is seen as underwhelming against a perceived underdog. For all of the training that goes into a bout, and for all of the qualities a man must show once he is one-on-one in the ring, the one obstacle a boxer can never truly conquer is expectations.

The list of people he must please include fans, networks, promoters and even himself.

This is the difference between the individual combat sports and the mainstream team sports. Players’ pay is still tied to performance, but the bottom line tied to that bottom line is winning. I really enjoyed reading this article, it felt like I was watching the fight all over again. And like I said before, big time props to Martinez for making the necessary adjustments to get the victory. I don't agree with him that he's still young though. ha lol!

Good read, sorry I missed this one. I still think Sergio should call out some larger opponents but don't blame him for wanting one of the multiple welter stars.

Terrible assesment. How did sergio have dug deep and come back? He might not have looked incredible in the first half but he was comfortable, dominating and landing nice shots, oh and there was no clean hits from maklin's side. Sounds more like you were listening to hbo instead of watching the fight. I would ask you to watch it againg with the volume down.

I agree, I only gave Macklin 3 rounds in the fight. Martinez didn't run through Macklin like he wasn't there so Martinez is now a bum, I guess....lol. The bottom line is that he won yet another fight by KO. HBO was attacking him I feel as retribution for his public thrashing of the network about a month ago. It's funny how they were all praises after the stoppage but crapping on him before the stoppage.

How did Sergio have to dig deep and come back? Well, there was the fact that he was losing the fight after eight... he turned up the pace and closed the show to take his fate into his own hands.

The whole ****ing problem here is that alot of people where too ignorant to acknowledge have good Macklin really is.

He just hammered ,outsmarted,and beat Felix sturm in his hometown, even the german tv believed sturm lost.
Macklin boxed the perfect fight against sergio and everyone that knows **** about boxing know this.
Sergio just has that "sugar" the great ones has and he proved it ones again by adjusting and kill his prey .

He would toy with chavez jr and knock him down, but hbo will never let the fight happen because the know this.
chavez jr is there new cash cow and sergio is not.

These guys Martinez has been fighting lately or glorified european stiffs... I think the best MW on that side of the water is Pirog and they won't fight him because if these last three guys can touch Martinez, Pirog who is younger and stronger than those guys will but the only difference is he'll do damage... Martinez benefited from his two fights against an over-rated Williams and weight drained drunk in Pavlik... Apart from those guys his MW comp is wack... This guy needs to fight a Pirog or even a Jacobs to solidify his claim to untouchable at 160... An 11 round TKO against a very slow and skill deprived Macklin isn't going to get it... No more slow guys, even though Jacobs got KOed he'll push Sergio better than these guys but the best fight at MW is Martinez vs. Pirog.... But I don't think that will happen....

This crap kills me, I am no Sergio fan but he may have lost 2-3 rounds at best. Who in the HELL had Macklin ahead? Blind retarded mutes? Typical BS...it was St. Pattys Day, in MSG and an Irish guy was fighting, that was it and is all the reason for this BS talk. Martinez hit the guy at will and needed some rounds to figure him out because of his style. The knockdown of Sergio was TOTAL BS, it was a leg sweep and a push-punch. Every left Sergio hit Macklin with he hurt him and busted his face up. He landed jabs at will as well. I read an article that said Sergio went "life and death" with Macklin....what??? Are you kidding me? So ridiculous. As I said I am not even a fan of Sergio, but I recognize his skills and what he has done. He has stopped his last 4 opponents and all of them were ranked in the top 10 of their weight class. Kirkland is a beast but Sergio would KO him. Pirog and Golovkin would give Sergio problems for sure. A revitalized Pavlik as well. JCC Jr. would be tough ONLY because he comes in the ring at 180+ lbs and would maul Sergio all around the ring and it would be hard for Sergio to get distance to box him.

Come on man...Pirog is almost 32 years old, Macklin was 29, Barker was 29 too. These guys aren't slow, it's Martinez that makes them look slow. LMAO at saying Martinez needs to prove himself against Danny Jacobs...I guarantee you that Barker, Dzinziruk, and Macklin all demolish Jacobs. I think that any of those guys also beat Pirog...I saw him struggling against some unknown guy but he is supposed to beat Martinez?
