Junior flyweight Luis Lazarte says that he had nothing to do with the riot that broke out last Saturday night in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After Filipino contender Johnreil Casimero stopped Lazarte in the tenth round to capture the IBF's interim title - a shower of chairs and bottles were thrown into the ring by a gang of fans. A angry mob rushed inside the ring and attacked Casimero and his handlers. Even some of the officials, including referee Eddie Claudio, suffered injuries in the riot.

Regarding the threats, sure, he can claim "heat of the moment," but how many points have been deducted from how many other boxers because of repeated fouls, and how many other boxers actually threaten the referee? I wonder if Lazarte has simply gotten accustomed to not being punished for fouling, and simply threw a fit when he finally was. Whatever the basis for the ban, I say: Good riddance. You will not be missed. |
