Default Bad idea to throw punches in a street fight???

So there's a school of thought among certain groups of self defence instructors that its a horrible idea to punch in a street fight.

Reason being that while its the simplest way to hurt someone...in your average everday self defense situation outside of the gym the risk of injury is just too much. Without gloved or handwraps you're more than likely gonna break your hand or wrist. And if your hand or wrist is broken its gonna make it impossible to wrestle away a knife or gun from your attacker should the need to defend yourself against weapons arise.

Thoughts???

Sparking the guy out is one of the real chances to save yourself should the option of running becomes unfeasible.

Of course having to throw a punch is not ideal, but if a guy has a knife and you can't run its the only chance you got, you're going to do everything in your power to subdue him which means throwing, choking, kicking and punching him. What the hell are you supposed to do? Your survival instincts are going to kick in.

It's stupid to take a chance and not do everything you can to subdue him first only for him to later out brandish out a weapon.

Btw most 'self-defense instructors' are horse *****.

Yeah most of them are full of it but the logic behind it does have have enough merit to encourage discussion. When you join a boxing gym they dont let you hit anything without handwraps for the same concern.

If you're unable to run or to avoid a fight, then it's not an idea, but a necessity to throw punches. The best way to avoid hand injuries (such as boxer's fracture) is by grabbing an object and pressing it with your hand forming a fist. This way your hand will be more solid and less likely to suffer from a broken bone.

About the wrist well the best way to avoid breaking it is by throwing straight punches and not hooks, since it's easier to control them and you could also easily avoid injuries. Finally the main thing to do when getting in a street fight is throwing controlled punches, not wild haymakers since those are easily countered and will get you tired pretty fast.

How high is the possibility to injure your hand when punching without wraps? If I just throw a straight right in his face with all the power I got? Cause a friend of mine broke his hand while punching a guy's shoulder blade once.
