As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, middleweight Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs) vacated his WBC Diamond title. The Argentine star was angry with the sanctioning body's failure to force a mandatory fight with WBC full champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0, 31KOs). The organization ordered the fight two weeks, at their 49th annual convention in Las Vegas. But a few days later WBC President Jose Sulaiman tried to get Martinez to step aside in order to allow Chavez to defend his title against number one ranked Marco Antonio Rubio (53-5, 46KOs) on February 4th in Texas.

Sergio honestly should just shut up with all of this press that he does everyday. It gets really annoying seeing him say "oh Chavez jr. this and that. Oh I hate him blah blah blah blah blah." Now he relinquishes his Diamond belt and expects a fight? He just loves to do stupid things huh? DiBella and his own stubbornness will now prevent any real fights for him. He isn't going to fight Pirog, Geale, Sturm, or Golovkin since they are "big names" like Mayweather or Pacquiao and he isn't going to be fighting any 154 or 168lbers. Even if Chavez jr. beats Rubio (pretty good chance as well) I doubt that Martinez will do anything different to get a fight with him. Now that he doesn't have the diamond belt (lol), Chavez jr. has no reason to fight him at all since the WBC can't force him. Essentially, he shot himself in the foot. He also probably thinks that Mayweather and Pac might fight him now... He has spent nearly 2 years calling them out, shouldn't he kinda get it by now that they aren't going to fight him? It's just common sense when you're 2 weight classes above them.
Sergio is probably just going to have a few more fights against decent fighters and just retire now that he's up in age. He's not getting any big fights anytime soon. |
