Jeff Fenech

Here's my Jeff Fenech story.

I grew up in London but was always a big Fenech fan. Really wanted to see him against McGuigan (another fighter I loved). McGuigan was a bigger fighter but Fenech's ferocity & workrate were incredible. I'd lean towards Jeff.

Anyway, back in 2006 I was living in Fresno, California. A mate of mine from Melbourne was working at a casino near Santa Barbara called Chumash. Vic Darchinyan was defending his title there & Fenech was his trainer/manager. After the fight Fenech gets my mate & says "Come on, lets go out on the piss" so they head off to this cowboy bar (it's California but it's real cowboy/country folk). Fenech soon gets pissed up & starts insulting the Rednecks, eventually calling one of the blokes wife a "Bushpig". My mate drags him out before they get shot & they hit another couple of bars with similar results.

Next day when I wake up, I have a voicemail from one of my Boxing heroes calling me an "unwashed Pommie cunt" and a "****ing bogan" & "I love youse".

It was one of the happiest days of my life The man is a legend. Why ain't there any boxers around like him these days....

LOL...great story...you should read Johnny Lewis' autobiography theres plenty of good Fenech stories in there...its a must read for any boxing fan!
Got to meet him a while back at the Rob Calloway vs Mark De Mori fight here in Aussie...such a blast what an absolute gentleman he was...and he was sitting right in front of me ringside too!!!

I have also read the Lewis book. Great read. I couldn't put it down.
I always say G'Day to Johnny on king st, he always says hello back, but that's what sort of bloke he is. Legend.

We've had dozens of nights a lot worse/better than that, just without the boxer.

Americans are nice but things always go up another level when Aussies, Brits & Paddies are involved in a piss up on foreign soil. It's like an unwritten rule to egg each other on to stupidity.

One of the best was me, a Paddy & two Aussies (one from the original story) popped into an Aussie Bar in San Diego at 1pm to have some pies. Turns out that they'd just had a couple of crates of Coopers Ale delivered. Then the barman turns out to have certain 'contacts'. None of us remembered **** all the next day but the digital camera had pictures of us at 4am skinny dipping in the ocean with some blonde birds wearing nothing but those cheap plastic Viking hats. Apparently the bar is the home of the local Green Bay Packer fans (same colours as Oz) & they'd been playing the Minnesota Vikings that night. Didn't remember any of that but the pictures weren't too flattering (coke + ocean shrinkage = not good).
