On another fight card, Neven Pajkic defeated Shane Andreesen by UD to win the Canadian heavyweight title.

Manuel Charr will be participating in the WBC World Cup

Rugged and exciting heavyweight Manuel Charr will be firing on all cylinders in the first Boxing World Cup that the WBC is organizing to start early in 2013.

Champions from all the affiliated confederations will participate in this cup as well as the international and silver champions.

“The end of this tournament is scheduled for 2014 and the winner will become the mandatory rival of the champion. I still don’t know who am I going to face but I don’t care, I don’t fear anybody” declared Charr.

I obviously overestimated Gerber. I never thought he would dominate the division, but I had him pegged as a top ten HW.

Michael Sprott (37-19, 17 KOs) won a majority decision over Edmund Gerber (22-1, 14 KOs). Scores were 97-94 (twice) and 95-95.

In Ukraine, Andrey Rudenko (WBO #14) scored 8 knockdowns before stopping Istvan Ruzhinskaya with a body punch in round 8.

Vladimir Tereshkin was less impressive, winning by UD over Maksym Pedyura.

Michael Sprott has put himself back in line for a European heavyweight title shot after a ten-round decision victory in what was his second clash with German prospect Edmund Gerber in Nurnberg.

The 37 year-old, who had lost four on the spin since his last victory against Serdar Uysal in March 2011, picked up where he left off against Gerber in September by scoring a majority win on the cards.

In their last meeting, Sprott was on top throughout, only to be controversially waved off after stating he was fine to continue to referee Gerhard Sigl in the fourth round and was subsequently banned for three months for shoving the Austrian official.

This time the Briton made no mistake by controlling long periods of the fight and Gerber had no answer to the wiley veteran’s tactics as Sprott was awarded the bout 97-94 (twice), with the other carding a 95-95 draw to make the bout look deceptively close.

By Jeff Sorby: Undefeated heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) wants to fight undefeated heavyweight prospect Bryant Jennings (16-0, 8 KO’s) next after Wilder defeated previously unbeaten Kevlin Price (13-1, 6 KO’s) by a 3rd round knockout on Saturday night at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. Wilder knocked Price out with a monster right hand in the 3rd round to get the knockout win.

After the fight Wilder said this “I want to be back in the ring as soon as possible, and I definitely want Bryant Jennings. I want him…the fans want it. There can only be one of us.”

That would be a good fight but also a potentially difficult one for Wilder right now because he would absolutely have to knock Jennings out in order to win the fight because Jennings’ style is more suited to winning a decision Wilder’s fight style. Jennings throws a lot of punches, has a great jab, and has decent but not great power.

Jennings may not hit as hard as Wilder, but he lands so many punches that he makes up for it by the sheer numbers of shots he throws. Right now I’d say that Jennings is the much better skilled fighter than Wilder, although that doesn’t mean he would win. Wilder hits incredibly hard with Lennox Lewis type power with his right hand, and if he can land that shot often enough, he’ll have a good chance of knocking Jennings out or anyone he faces.

I’d be surprised if Golden Promotions, the promoters for Wilder, allowed him to take a fight with a fighter as advanced as Jennings. Wilder looked pretty raw last night in beating Price, and it would sad to see Wilder in a fight where he’d pretty much absolutely need a knockout in order to win.

Wilder needs more work on using his jab because he wasn’t throwing it nearly enough last night, and he rarely threw any left hooks. It was either a pawing jab or a right hand, and not much else. To beat a fighter like Jennings, Wilder needs more tools.
