Post Comments Thread For: CompuBox: Donaire vs Narvaez Historical Comparison

CompuBox reviews the last five fights for the two boxers involved in tonight's HBO televised main event from Madison Square Garden in New York City. It's going to be a battle of Nonito Donaire's power and counter punching vs. Omar Narvaez's volume punching and defense. Donaire landed 52% of his power punches, while Narvaez's opponents landed just 15% of their total punches.

Nice punch average from Narvaez.

Should keep things interesting before he goes to sleep.

I think Omar's south paw stance and excellent defensive style will give Donaire a lot of problems in the beginning of the fight. It will be a chess match, IMO. Yes, Vic Darchinyan was a south paw too but he had no defense against counter punchers with power. Omar is a better all around boxer compared to Vic.

Boxing purists will love this fight, casual fans expecting a devastating KO from Donaire might be disappointed. Unless.....well, one of them lands a huge punch. Not sure if Omar is a one punch KO artist though.

The more a fighter throws punches, the more opening he presents to his opponent for neat counters. Nonito can't be all that worried about Omar landing a big one--Omar never had in his career, his stoppage wins having come via combinations of four or more punches. Donaire will not mind being hit too much as he looks to place a showstopper somewhere in Narvaez's anatomy where damage will be huge. Remember Sydorenko? Nonito has always looked for the counter punch opportunity against all of his opponents since Darchynyan; even against opponents with reputations of carrying huge mitts to the ring. He won't think twice about using the same against foes with lesser power. His incredible run of 90% KO rate (9 of 10 wins by KO/TKO) since stopping Darchynyan with a counter left is testament to his success in using that strategy. I see no way that Omar can deal and change that unless he's been able to recently buy sufficient power to make Nonito think twice.

Omar can try crowding Nonito with the end of suffocating him, throw punches as he goes in. But that shall prove to be a huge mistake. Or, he can try fighting from a distance but that would play into Nonito's height and reach advantage.

Omar has one good chance: his chin may serve him well enough to take him to the final bell and thus make him only the second man to do that in the last five years, Rafael Concepcion being the last one who did. But I won't bet on it.

Hahaha I assume we're in the same place then. BTW, instead of watching shitty undercards fights at MSG where we're almost sure who's gonna win, am watching HBO 24/7. Will watch the ABS-CBN telecast later.

Likewise to you and your family, buddy.

Omar Narvaez wasn't as good as advertised, pal. Didn't even come close.

I'm left wondering if Frankie Narvaez, who gave the first Filipino Flash (Elorde) as much as he took in their fight in the old MSG (which was on the same 8th avenue but several steps removed) back in the mid-60's, is spinning in his grave. I must add, however, that Frankie and Omar are neither blood-related and compatriots--Frankie was Puerto Rican, Omar hails from Argentina.

Great talking to you again, bud! Catchya soon! :-)
