Post Comments Thread For: Nonito Donaire - What’s the Hurry? Stay Awhile

by Cliff Rold - Double belted bantamweight titlist Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO) is, to most eyes, the leader of his division. It is the third in which he has won some manner of title in since 2007. There is talk of a fourth, fifth, even sixth division. His challenger this Saturday night is an echo from the first class, a unification bout that wasn’t.

While Donaire was defending the IBF 112 lb. title he won with a knockout of Vic Darchinyan, Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO) was in the middle of a 16-defense WBO reign in the same division. Narvaez has since also capture a WBO belt at 115 lbs., a division where Donaire was an interim titlist before moving to 118 lbs. in 2010. Now they square off in a bout where what appears to be a relatively light rise in weight is considered a heavy advantage for Donaire. [Click Here To Read More]

He was at 12 not that long ago and he's not Manny; he was already well in his 20s. If he blew up to 140 something, maybe he wasn't working to hard to keep his weight right with the long layoff?

And, with no undisputed champs around, we don't know for sure who best in classes are down low. Cleaning out the best division in boxing would be bad ass.

Killing himself when making weight is not the way to go for Nonito. Pacman found that out by being ktfo at flyweight. Pacman jumped two weight-divisions to get back on track.

Pac was barely 20 when his body coughed him up. Donaire just moved to Bantam, comfortably, at 27 years old. No doubt 118 isn't easy, but this also smacks of moving up just to do it. If we end up with Nishioka, all good. If instead it ends up with some non-fight like Arce, fans should recognize the potential hustle there.

Those aren't good analogies, Cliff, because there was no expectation that the boxing commission would overturn the Santa Cruz-Casamayor result or the Castillo-Mayweather result, whereas everyone expects the boxing commission to overturn the Hopkins-Dawson result. Furthermore, The Ring have made it clear that they will recognise Dawson as the champion should the boxing commission decide to uphold the result and declare Dawson the winner.

This is a case without any real precedent that I can think of and giving past examples that are not analogous doesn't wash.

It's extremely unfortunate that the commission didn't bring forward their meeting in order to consider the case quickly. Had they done so, this wouldn't be an issue.

I do agree with you, though, that a better solution would have been to declare the Ring title temporarily void pending the commission's decision. But I don't agree that it would have been right to declare Dawson the new champion in the circumstances, given that the result will almost certainly be changed by the commission in December.

I agree, Nonito should stay for a while at BW or at SBW. I just don't get others who want to him move up quickly. If he can still make the weight, let him stay there. I don't see these same people mention Tomas Rojas, Anselmo Moreno, and Cristian Mijares to move up. These are guys who taller or just as tall as Donaire.

Dave:

I disagree in the sense that the analogies were pointing to clearly wrong decisions made where official verdicts were respected. Their ratings have their records official to TKO2 (for now)....the title status should read the same until the verdict is changed. That's my take. Not moving the Earth much either way I assume, but I think it's important not to change the approach to official verdicts.

what for? moreno said he needs 2 more fights before nonito and demanded way to much it was ridculous. mares is with golden boy so the only way nonito might get the touney winner is if agbecko wins. he already darchinyan, and he gets nothing for beating perez. so who really is worth waiting for at bw?
