Post Comments Thread For: Dawson-Hopkins Recap: This Time, Maybe They’re Right

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I’ve got to admit, this one even got to me.

Though I’ve heard it each time for years when my beloved boxing has had one of those nights, not one time have I ever thought, “You know, maybe all these people are on to something.”

Not when Fan Man crashed Bowe-Holyfield.

Not when Tyson gobbled Evander’s earlobes.

Not when Kermit Cintron tumbled to a ridiculous scorecard loss.

And not when Floyd Mayweather knocked Victor Ortiz loopy.

The death knell was sounded – in some places louder than others – after each of those events and several more, but I’ve never been one to give it much thought.

In good times or bad, some folks hate boxing. It’s a fact of life. And those of us who love the sport have learned to ignore the persistent din.

I get it. The prospect of two guys getting into a ring with shoes, trunks, gloves and a goal of inflicting damage on each other isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Some prefer more tepid pursuits like golf or tennis.

Others would lose the shoes and put the whole thing in a cage. And there’s always the contrarian bunch who’ll revel in up, left and white when the inarguable stands are down, right and black.

Perhaps it’s a lesson learned from gridlocked genius in Washington.

But regardless of origin, it’s nothing I take too seriously.

Or at least I didn’t until Saturday.

This time, after another several weeks of anticipatory build-up, another anticlimactic five minutes in the ring and another predictable “I’m the real champ/No, you’re not” press conference, I’m feeling a little less like being tied to the whipping post – thank you, Gregg Allman – once again. The sport isn't on the down side because of mishaps like Hopkins vs. Dawson. Which I think should stay as called. It was pathetic and I don't think Hopkins was really hurt. But maybe he was. If he was really hurt from that fall then he should retire today.
The sport of boxing is hurting because match ups people want to see are not happening. I am a fan of both mma and boxing, but mma appears to make the match ups we want to see. People can tall all they want about Dana White having a strangle hold on the fighters, but fans DO NOT care about that. Sure there are fights that fans want to see and don't.... but is that the norm?
I do not care for either model from a financial stand point. Not on their end, but on mine. Fights at $55 a pop is too steep, I love the fights on premium HBO or Showtime. Crappy match ups .... or match too late... plus high costs will continue to erode the boxing base. For me always a fan.

I don't mean to be a dick but it's always the brothas that have to **** things up and bring the damn circus into the ring! We saw it with Hopkins vs Dawson.. seen it with Bradley vs Campbell...seen it with Alexander vs Bradley...seen it Mayweather vs Ortiz...seen it with Tyson vs Holyfield...Haye vs Klitschko....Lorenzo vs Soto.... Dirrell vs Abraham!!..Mitchell vs Bryan.. Zab Judah vs Amir Khan!! .... the list goes on and on!! Don't even argue with me on this one because i have a very VALID POINT!...not to mention evidence to support my claim! The ****d up part is that people pay money to watch these fights and bet thounsands of dollars ...the least we should get is a good show! I'm tired of the ring circus...that's why you can't go wrong with most Mexican boxers..they guaranteed a good show!!

Default The Racket Squad: The Rapture

It's quite hard to maintain a vision of the sport that is not cynical.
When you hear a Dawson proclaim himself champ without having thrown a winning punch, it says more about the man then the game.
If you think Hopkins simply threw away a hard earned rep with a dive, then you probably need to abandon the fistic field.
But we cannot forget that on the same night, two men fought their hearts out leaving a potential 'prodigy' looking like a club fighter at the end.
That is still an event worthy of praise and devout devotion to a tired sport.
We also saw a 52 year old man whose life was given glory and meaning due to the influence of boxing.
In the end, it all just evens out and does not signal boxings 'end of days'.

The "brothas" that turn the sport into a circus are the same people that keep boxing alive and sell tickets. You know about their acts or "circus"-like behavior because their name is in the spot -light. I've seen many Mexican boxers who don't deliver well; however, they are not big names so it goes by unnoticed.

I'm usually calling for this guys boxing writers card to get burned but he's at least got something right

boxing is scary bad when its bad

60 bucks for that?

you've got to be kidding me.

and as for the demarco and linares war... a non boxing person wouldn't have realized what was going on for most of that fight.

outside of the blood it was a pretty standard looking boxing match with one guy clearly superior to the other. demarco fought in short surges for most of the fight and was very much unwilling to let his hands go until the very last stages of the fight

in the 11th, however, i'm sure even some of the most critical of boxing were impressed

what a fvckin round

semi-unrelated note:

get demarco another big fight, hbo
and have your guys actually talk about him this time, instead of only mentioning him in terms of how good linares looks against him.

you cant blame jim lampley. that guy comes as he is billed.
he's got a crush on every handsome HBO fighter
like a school girl

You all have valid point...but i'm just tired of all the BS ...especially when boxers fake injuries! I know it's a tough sport but people are also paying for PPV and betting on these fights. Anyway I didn' t mean it in a wrong way i know there's a lot of brotha's that put on a good show and are worth every single penny of the PPV price or ticket. With that said i hope boxing gets it's act together because it loosing a lot of credibility from the non-boxing community..
