Post Comments Thread For: Emanuel Steward: Hopkins vs Dawson is a 50-50 Fight

NEW YORK — On the same day Chad Dawson disputed it on a conference call, former trainer Emanuel Steward said again that Dawson told him he wanted to train for his Oct. 15 fight against Bernard Hopkins in Pennsylvania’s Poconos because Dawson wanted to be closer to his family. Like he showed against Calzaghe right? BHop has never faced a southpaw like Dawson.

LMAO heres what some have to say about the Slapzaghe fight..its on wikipedia...if its ther its true lol...
Main article: Bernard Hopkins vs. Joe Calzaghe
On April 19, 2008, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Hopkins clearly lost The Ring Light Heavyweight championship to Joe Calzaghe by split decision (116-111 and 115-112 for Calzaghe; 114-113 for Hopkins). Hopkins started the fight well, dropping Calzaghe in the first round and using his ring savvy to confuse the challenger. Calzaghe never got the opportunity to showcase his blazingly fast hands and his combinations. Hopkins would smother him whenever he tried to come in and throw more than one punch. It was a fairly close fight, according to CompuBox, as Calzaghe landing more punches on Hopkins than any of his previous opponents.[14]

The Associated Press,[15] New York Daily News,[16] Yahoo! Sports,[17] ESPN.com[18] and Fighthype[19] all scored it 114-113 for Bernard Hopkins.

"It was a good fight. I thought Bernard (Hopkins) won though," commented former undisputed Heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson.

"Hopkins beat Calzaghe, let's not forget. It was a split decision and a very close call, Calzaghe got beat up, his nose was bust and Hopkins was unmarked." Super middleweight champion Carl Froch commented, "Come on, put it in perspective and let's not lose our minds here, he was put on his ass by a 43-year-old (Bernard Hopkins) and 40-year-old (Roy Jones Jr.) in his last two fights."[20]

In his post-fight interview, Hopkins said, "... I mean it's clear that the world know, and the fans know other than the Brits, know I won this fight...", Hopkins further proclaimed, "I took the guy to school..."

It was a close fight, but for most of the fight all Hopkins did was move and hold. It was a pathetic showing by Hopkins, who purposely made the fight ugly. Dawson isn't Calzaghe, he's bigger than Calzaghe, and he is just as fast. And if Hopkins tries smothering Dawson by holding him, Hopkins will get countered.

If anything Dawson should win. I'm hoping he does, I'd rather have someone young ruling light heavyweight when all these 168ers move up.

As a boxing fan i def agree he made the Calzaghe fight look kinda bad..but it was a split decision and the one judge whom had it waaay outta hand is a judge whom is known for horrible horrible judging...Hopkins is not dumb..never was..he will have the perfect gameplan...and altho Dawson has gr8 potential Hop knows what he's getting in2 moreso than Dawson...I hope its a good fight tho..but Hop def knows the key against lefties...Hop is simply the looong veteran...he will go by technique and strategy...hopefully Dawson does the same but he is a younger hungrier fighter whom may get too excited and make too many mistakes...dont get me wrong tho i respect Dawson

No Emanuel nobody thinks Dawson is going to lose because you're not in his corner they think he will lose because he is too passive at times and because Hopkins has made a career of schooling fighters. I saw no improvement at all from Dawson while Emanuel was training him.

I give Dawson a decent chance of winning if he can keep the workrate high but I would never bet against B-Hop again.

P.S. I hope Chad wins, he is the perfect guy to take over the Ring title for when old man retires.

Calzaghe being a lefty had nothing to do with that fight being so close. It had to do with the workrate of calzaghe and the low workrate of hopkins. Hopkins also faded a bit late in the fight. If hopkins would have/could have been more aggressive in the later rounds he gets the W no question about it.

Now if Dawson can throw as many punches as calzaghe and hopkins runs out of steam in the later rounds, then he has a problem. But the lefty part of the equation was never an issue. It's not like Hopkins was eating tons of shots, calzaghe was simply throwing more punches than hopkins which the judges rewarded him for.
