WBC to certify boxing gloves
Do you think this is a step in the right direction or a potential money grab. In the future WBC could potentially tax/charge equipment manufacturers to be certified.
The WBC is in the process of boxing gloves certification and starting 2012 the WBC will only approve those certified gloves to be used in WBC official bouts. This process is being performed by a laboratory under the quality control norms and procedures of ISO. Raw materials, cushioning, sticking, weight, water resistance, etc. are some of the tests that are being performed and several different performance tests are evaluated with specially designed equipment. The certification has no cost and it is intended to make sure that the boxing glove, which is the only equipment that boxing has, is always of the highest quality. The General Coordinator of this program is Bob Yalen, and as of June 2011, three brands have been officially certified, Winning (Japan), Rival (Canada) and Reyes (Mexico). The WBC expects all major brands participate in this process in the very near future.

Aside from tampering of the gloves (which this certification does not apply to), has there even been an issue with a particular brand of boxing gloves? I know that sometimes there are stipulations in fighters' respective contracts that specify the brand/color that the can or cannot wear but why should this be issue for the sanctioning body?
For the most part, glove brands like Everlast, Grant, Reyes, Winning, Londsdale, etc. are universally accepted. This to me, is a money grab as the TS stated. Just another way for the WBC to make $$$ off of boxing, and that in turn means, less money for the promoter and then the fighters....
