Default North Wales Boxing Gym's??

Do they exist??

I've really fancied joining a boxing gym for a while. I'm reasonally fit and obviously enjoy the sport but I haven't been able to find any gym's since moving here a couple of years ago.

I moved from Manchester and you could hit a boxing gym if you span around in a circle and threw a stone in any direction but they seem none-existent in NW.

Any help would be great.

Thanks mate, very helpful.

Now I haven't ever set foot in a boxing gym. I've been into proper Karate and Taekwondo gyms though, I hold a Karate Black belt and a Taekwondo green belt. What's the general done thing when you walk through the door? Do I just turn up and hit a bag or do I need to ring first and speak with a trainer? What is the coaching like? Is it one to one? group? or does everyone just do their own thing with coaches floating between? I wouldnt want to walk in a make a massive fool of myself

At our gym, some people just turn up, some phone before hand. It makes no difference to us.

When you meet the coaches, make sure you tell them what you want to get out of boxing. Do you want to compete? Just spar but not compete? Get fit etc.

If you want to compete you will get more coaching time.

Well, at our gym and most other gyms I have been to (about 10 others), most of the time you will have to do your own thing - There simply aren't enough coaches to work with everyone for prolonged periods.

We try and take everyone on the pads every session but it's usually not possible due to the numbers (most lads will get on the pads twice per week though). When not recieving one on one instruction on the pads, the boxers will be shadow boxing, hitting the bag, skipping, out running / hill sprints etc.

Obviously, you will get some instruction whilst sparring.

Then we have group fitness sessions usually at the end.

In general though, for a large portion of each session, it's just a case of practicing what you have been taught on the pads on your own.

Personally, I usually spend more time coaching lads who are the most committed regardless of ability. So, if you want to get more one to one instruction, I would recommend making sure you: attend as often as possible, work hard when you are there, ask questions (to coaches and more experienced boxers), listen and do as you are asked, be the first in the gym and the last out, ask your coach to spar.

If a lad does all the above and is enthusiastic I will make time for him i.e. open the gym early / keep it open late / organise sparring at different clubs for him etc.

Are any of those clubs near you?

I think it'd be best to go and have a chat with them first. There are probably forms to fill in when you join, and if the gym is like most then they won't have a website with a timetable on so you'll have to pop down and see what time things take place anyway.

What style of karate did you do?

Dyffryn in Colwyn bay is probably the closest. I'll def look into it. Thanks for the list.

Just what I was looking for, thanks mate. I would love to compete at some point, love the idea of a test and gritting my teeth. I wouldn't be opposed to jumping in there for a sparring session with someone good to measure myself, I'm sure I would get my arsed kicked but something like that would give me a lot of motivation.

I hope I dont sound stupid like "Yeah I'm going in there and kicking the crap out of the best guy in the gym on my first day", its not what I mean. I would obviously take my time with everything but I would hope to spar with guys that are better than me, does that make sense?

Course mate. I know exactly what you mean.

Good luck with it.
