Yes, to exploit the opening he had to swallow a fair few Louis jabs.
To be honest though, Joe did look a bit flat the night he fought Schmelling. He seemed much more lively and sharp early on against Baer. I could believe that over confidence might have been an issue, or just 'a bad day at the office'. Louis did have several of those.
