• BoxingScene Project: Get Johnny Tucan McGinty to the hall?

First off some background on him for those that don't know:

He was a very talented fighter, excellent combination puncher, very tough, they say he earned the nickname Tucan because he supposedly poked a fighter in the eye with his nose.

Born in 1883, his record officially was 127-11-9(98 KOs), although that is sort of inaccurate as he had alot of non-sanctioned bouts, particularly against black fighters, who whites were not allowed to fight at that time, so his real record is actually unknown.

He had somewhat of a catch phrase where he said "fighters are fighters, no matter the color". He was one of the first popular white American figures to voice for equality for blacks not just as boxers, but as human beings and he took a great deal of flak for it back in his time.

Because of his willingness to fight any and everyone including black fighters, the history books have practically wiped his memory away. I think it is about time that Mr. McGinty has finally gotten his due, I am thinking of maybe trying to start a petition or something to try to get the IBHOF to recognize him as he has not gotten in yet. What do you guys think? I think this could be a cool collective boxing project that could really put our community here at Boxingscene on the map.

I thought he was already in , it's a shame there's no footage of this guy.

Not sure how far a petition would go but I'd gladly join in whatever.

Sounds like a good thing to me. Do you know where there are any articles about him or any information? There does not seem to be any easily assessable on the internet. If you wrote something up with your sources cited or give a list of where to get information it may be a good way to have people learn more about him, me included.

Yea I am not sure how far a petition would go either, but I think having one along with an article on boxing scene about it would atleast bring some attention to someone that is practically ignored.

Thats the tough part there is practically nothing about him on the internet, only 2 articles by Bert Sugar along with some small text in a couple books. I plan on going to the Library when I get a chance to find as much as I can on him to put as much info out on him as possible. Also to set up a Wikipedia page him as well.

He truely is the forgotten warrior. Rarely has a nickname been more fitting. I actually doubt that anybody in the HOF selection commitee has brought him up. I think that these old-timers are out of style. The commitee probably feels that the turn of the century fighters are over-represented.

Agreed. That is why I want to star this movement to make sure that he isn't forgotten. I am going to go to the library this weekend to start doing some research to put together some info on him, like atleast a wikipedia for starters. If anyone has any known books that talks about Tucan please let me know.

We should start our own Hall of Fame for old timers here it'd be a cool project, I admit I'd never heard his name until you came along. La Vibora for history forum Hall of Fame president. I will see what I can find, it may be a good idea for a petition but we need to make as strong a case for him as well, I'm for it.

There definitely needs to be an institution dedicated to all the pre-20's fighters, They don't necessarily have to be ATG's to have the right there were hundreds of top class fighters then and some are already in danger of being wiped off the pages of history. I know Tommy Uren was a great fighter but trying to find out about him is hard, there is just boxrec, i know there's a picture of him but I'm still looking, thanks for the thread.
