It’s different; in the UK, people from India and Pakistan are known as Asians; while in other countries and majority of the world they are know by their nationalities. Asian people are usually referred to people who live in Far East Asia. Technically, he is Asian, but better refer to him as people from the Subcontinent

As mentioned in the UK 'Asian' is a term used for people of the sub-continent i.e India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, in other parts of the world it would be used describe people from China and other Eastern Asian countries.
