By the sound of this post it sounds like Messi has underperformed when the lights are the brightest. This is another important quality that the greats of all time have. Under the spotlight the very best usually elevate their game and their teammates play. That was one of Micheal Jordans greatest traits(besides all the other stuff). In the biggest games and the most crucial situations he was able to play even better and it wasn't just in his prime. In college at the ripe age of 20 he won the National Championship for UNC on a game winning shot.

Yep Messi has pretty much flopped at the international stage.
The reason why he is so good at Barca is because of the unsung heroes supporting him - Xavi, Iniesta etc. He can't have anything near that quality of a midfield while playing for Argentina.

If Messi is only great one aspect of the game he is in same category as a lot of great athletes but certainly not the greatest of all time.

I believe some other people were indicating that Messi had never won a world cup either. Now, when I'm debating the greats of all time championships don't weigh heavily because most sports are team games and one player does not make up a whole team but when you are comparing the greatest athletes ever, winning a title or multiple titles are very important. The greatest athlete of all time should be able to lead his team to a championship at least once in his lifetime.

A guy like Micheal Jordan who is without a doubt the best player in the NBA was by far the best scoring threat in the league, the most clutch player in the league and arguably one of the best defenders in leagues history. It's one thing to dominate one side of the ball but it's another to dominate both. Not to mention in soccer the playmakers don't play the whole field and the spotlight is no where near as it is compared to the Jordan example. Jordan was the spotlight in a game that is 5 on 5, not 10 on 10 or whatever soccer is. Don't even think they are even in the same league. A guy like Bo Jackson is also more talented than Messi as well.
so you want messi to run down a soccer field to help defend and then run back up to attack? i can see you dont know much about soccer and he does do it all the time but its not his job.

Laughable.

Do you even follow Robben? When he's fit ill even put him about Ronaldo or Messi no doubt about it. Do you not see Robbens talent? That guy is the heart of bayern munich, amazing footwork, perhaps the best left foot in europe, great freekick taker, takes penaltys like a champ, rapes at the international stage, rapes in his league.

I don't see how he doesn't come close to those two.

I must not get it because I don't think that is comparable. Of course a goalie isn't going to be a scorer because he is a in a confined area and obviously is too far to have a scoring change, just like hockey. I don't understand how a striker can't be a good defender in soccer though. I've watched soccer before and players are not confined to just one sport or to only push the ball. There is chances for scorers to steal the ball, push the opponent in 1 on 1 battles into bad angles or kick the ball away out of bounds. If soccer doesn't have awards for best defenders between strikers they really need to. I would assume that defense out of a striker would be a nice asset to have because it gives your offense more chances on offense because his foot skills might be able to create them by taking the ball away from the other team. I don't know the sport but in sports like soccer, scorers still play both sides and attempt to create turnovers.
