Because the government has to borrow the money it prints from the federal reserve at interest.

UK is on 2.3 Trillion if you include the bank bail outs (Which the banks are paying off now that they are in profit), but 1.1 Trillion National debt if it's equivalent to the US 14 Trillion.

Actually the 14 trillion figure includes bank bailouts as well, most of which have been paid back (though it appears to be sitting in a slush fund somewhere.)

We have 144 Million a year.

I never said the UK was not in debt, but it is still in less debt than the US.
