Here's another one with a twist of sadness. It's an account from Jack McKinney, a Philadelphia journalist who flew with Liston after the 1st Patterson fight.
After Sonny won the title in Chicago he sat on the plane rehearsing a mini speech he'd prepared for the reception at the airport. It went, "I know a lot of my own people were against me, i want to prove to them that i'm not going to embarrass them. I'll make them proud." "So when he finally landed in Philadelphia, he took a step outside a stood there for a moment, just looking. I could see him looking both ways. Nothing. Nobody was there. I could almost see the air go out of him. The big broad shoulders infront of me just seemed to sag." |
