Manny Pacquiao vs Paul Williams at 147.. What happens?

A lot of people treat this fight as though it's a given Paul Williams's height gives Pacquiao too many problems. But it's also possible that Paul's lankiness and additional height at the welter weight limit works against him. I think the way this matches up, Pacquiao is in excellent position to compete.

-First of all, at 147 there's no way Paul Williams is as strong as he is at 160. That extra weight definitely provides him with comfort in training camp, that he will desperately miss at welter weight.

-Second, Pacquiao is actually so short in comparison that Paul would likely have to give up a lot of his height at times in bending down and/or reaching to hit Pacquiao. Particularly disadvantageous when against an opponent with the foot speed of Pacquiao, potentially at times leaving Williams' dangerously out of position.

-Third, Pacquiao darting in and out would simply need flurry combinations on Williams' midsection to score. This could be a highly competitive fight and close on the scorecards with a frustrated Williams in essence attempting to swat at a fly who's 1 step faster.

Admittedly however, on the flip side it is also possible Paul catches Pacquiao with a near middleweight punch and the fight is not competitive. Regardless, this fight might not be as ridiculous as it appears.

Williams wins a lopsided decision in a brutal, brutal fight. Both guys would take a lot of big punches, I have enough respect for Pac's chin to say he lasts the distance.

Paul would make it lopsided with his jab, tripling up such a long jab on a guy as small and aggressive as Pacquiao would really discourage him.

Pac DQ'd for landing every punch he throws to the nuts

I don't think he can land his jab. Certainly not when he's double and trippling up. Think the most laterally fleet footed Pacquiao you've ever seen. The head movement. The fact that by the time his jab leaves his guard and reaches at Pac, Pac is already 4 steps to the left or right. Either Pac fights a relatively perfect fight with constant movement and Paul can't catch him. Or paul catches him a couple times, Pac slows down and gets stopped. Putting up ear muffs and sitting on the ropes or being remotely stationary is a death sentence for Pac in this fight.

Vegas would probably be giving great odds for this fight too!

Because of the size difference and the style Pacquiao fights, I don't think Paul would have to land the jab for it to be effective just having that long arm out there would mess with Pac.

Pac would get his shots of course, and the fight would be brutal, but Pac would be relegated to going to the body most the time, whereas Paul would be hitting the head.

For 2011, if Pacquiao beats Margarito and Mayweather is still MIA. Which I doubt he will be. And if there isn't a head and shoulders above the rest 140 pounder.. I say roll the dice.

Also, if Pac clearly matches up poorly, Roach be ready with the towel. No sense taking a career threatening beating. No shame against an oak tree.

You hit the nail dead on its head, the height disparity works
against Paul. If he's 147 at weigh-in, his punch resistance
(especially midsection) takes a dive no matter what, and
Pac is too quirky-fast to be fended off consistently via jab.
at 154 things get interesting, and if it were to be Martinez at
154, I'd be super stoked to see it.

This is all moot and academic however.

At a glance, Williams at 147 could potentially be safer than Martinez at 154. I believe Martinez sitting down on a punch at 154 puts Pacquiao on the floor and effectively on ***** street. He also has the speed and accuracy to land something like that flush on Pac. You'd also get a ton of media attention for this little guy vs this visibly more daunting character in Williams. Dear Uncle Bob, shock the world sign the fight.
