For those fans who are excited about a potential return by the undefeated Joe Calzaghe, please wait a moment before you throw an un-retirement party.
Early speculations are that Calzaghe will return to the ring and have a rematch against Bernard Hopkins. These speculations have been fueled by the recent comments from Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer.
"He expressed an interest. Maybe he's going to do it again. I don't know for sure. There were no concrete discussions. He did mention Bernard [Hopkins], and Bernard would be interested in such a fight too. I plan on going to Europe in a couple of weeks and I'll see what's going to happen." Schaefer, Boxingscene.com
Jack Sanderson Sacramento, CA "Would you be interested in a Hopkins vs. Calzaghe rematch?"
I don't know about many of you, but I for one wouldn't be happy to see a rematch between the two. An aged Hopkins left a sour taste in the mouths of boxing critics after his performance against an equally disappointing Roy Jones Jr.
Hopkins had defied father time in the ring, but father time has caught up to him. Hopkins looks slower and less athletic than before.
Calzaghe hasn't fought since November 2008 when he defeated Roy Jones Jr by Unanimous Decision. Let's just say that his performance against Jones Jr didn't have people singing praises. If this rematch were too happen, Calzaghe would be approaching a 2 year layoff.
In addition to an uninspired return fight, Calzaghe is coming off a public relations nightmare. Joe was busted in an undercover investigation for *******.
He had to publicly announce his engaging in the use of ******* but dismissed any serious problems. To me, even if it was only one time it's still a serious problem.
Conclusion
There's no reason for Joe and Bernard to fight again at this point in their careers. We don't need another fight tha leaves us fans feeling ripped off or hustled.
I would prefer Calzaghe come back and fight a real contender. Have Joe return and face one of the other middleweight champions not named Sergio Martinez. How about a fight against the WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm? It can take place over in Europe which would be significant for both fighters.
