Jokes aside (they're not unwanted) but, YES absolutely!.. Toney could do it all, and if he'd kept himself in better shape, he'd be in contention for a top 20 place in the list of P4P ATG's too..
He was a brilliant amateur, losing only 2 out of 35 fights with 32 KO's!
He's also been a titlist in 3 divisions as a pro with moderate to great success's in 5 divisions, and within a whisker of the HW title.. 'Lights Out' vs Joe Choynski would've been a belter!..
Toney has never been KO'd either, and all bar one of his defeats have been razor tight DC's.. Only a prime RJJ was able to give a weight weakened Toney a bit of a boxing lesson.. I think he may have had Hopkin's number too, but that's open to debate..
One other thing that may or may not put his ATG status in the shade, are the recent steroid revelations, but once again, this is seemingly open to debate..
As a boxer though, he had it all there in a natural capacity.. Take a look at his resume:-

    Beaten
    Sanderline Williams
    Merqui Sosa
    Michael Nunn
    Reggie Johnson
    Mike McCallum
    Doug DeWitt
    Iran Barkley
    Tony Thornton
    Tim Littles
    Charles Williams
    Steve Little
    Vassiliy Jirov
    Evander Holyfield
    Dominick Guinn
    Fres Oquendo

    Draw/NC
    Hasim Rahman
    John Ruiz

    Lost DC
    Roy Jones
    Drake Thadzi
    Montell Griffin
    Sam Peter

Toney was voted Ring Magazines, Fighter of the Year in 1991 and 2003, so that's at least 12 years as a main player in 5 divs.. That's pretty impressive, and more than enough to convince me..

There's definitely an argument to be made, and Mickey did a pretty damn good one. If only he had been more consistent.

Depends how far out you go, I guess. Top 50 is arguable, he's a cinch for top 100.

yes , James Toney is definitely a top50 ATG.
          maybe even top20.
in the recent 25 years there are more who use steroids than those who do not.
          and roid jones didn't use them ? and mosley ? holyfield ? tyson ? bruno ? botha ? morisson ? hopkins ? pacquiao ?
was toney stopped as an amateur ? and if not , who beat him then ?

One can only laugh at Malone's post.Excuses, lies and exaggerations all in one.A "bit of a boxing lesson" he says? Toney was taken to school, given a detention, made to stay behind and got his ass spanked by the headmaster.

The only elite fighter that Toney fought who was in his prime and Toney didn't belong in the ring with him.Jorge Castro put up a greater effort than fat Toney, but because he didn't do some silly shoulder roll that made a bunch of nerdy boxing fans put their hands down their pants, nobody cares about him.

Anyone who has James Toney listed as an ATG is a moron.

            Dominick Guinn?
            Sanderline Williams?
            Merqui Sosa?
            Tony Thornton?
            Tim Littles?
            Steve Little?

This is a resume of a great? LMAO

Toney apologists will cry and whine that he was robbed against Montell Griffin twice, and yet they will ignore the fact that Toney picked up a gift decision over Mike McCallum.Toney was made to look inferior against a better boxer,a superior counter puncher with greater defense than Toney, but because Mike McCallum didn't do some silly shoulder roll.....nobody cares.

Toney tests positive for steroids twice but because he did some silly shoulder roll....nobody cares.

My post was partially directed towards you,not entirely. That post was directed towards ever boxing purist who thinks some silly shoulder roll makes a truly great fighter.

The part I directed towards you was where you make an excuse for Toney getting his arse handed to him by Roy Jones, and that mediocre resume that you listed.

Cut the potty mouth out too,Malone.

and nunn , barkley , arthur williams , holyfield ?
and a close fight including a knockdown over jirov ?
                  ramon garbey ?
toney had one of the best oppositions that ever fighter alive ever had.
true castro did better than him against jones , but toney was severely drained in that fight. if he was not going to be , jones would have never fought him.

Oh,well there you go,Michael Nunn too.None of the others were elite.barkley was used up by the time Toney got him,and while he was a good, tough fighter,he was never an elite fighter.I,and every other true fan of the sport refuse to recognise his victory over Evander Holyfield.Vasily Jirov was an overrated paper champion who's a product of Toney's overrated legacy, and that fight wasn't close either,Toney beat the ever loving **** out of him.

Jirov was no Gomez, and he wasn't a Mormeck either.

                    Ramon who?

Roy Jones moved up,and signed for a title fight at 168,how exactly was he to know what type of shape fat Toney was going to show up in?

Toney has struggled to make weigh at every weight class but one, in which there is no limit for his fat ass.

Toney signed to fight with a superior fighter who he thought was easy pickings and the easy picking ruined him and humiliated him.
