Tszyu taking no chances
TSZYU CREW TAKING NO CHANCE
Wednesday 20th April 2005
Kostya Tszyu will arrive in England surrounded by a huge security presence.
The IBF light-welterweight champ will take on Ricky Hatton in front of an unusually large presence of minders and stewards following his manager's fact-finding mission to Manchester.
Matthew Watt has been on these shores checking out the MEN Arena, accomodation and training facilities ahead of his world title showdown with Hatton on June 4.
The fight itself starts at 2am on Sunday morning and after voicing concerns at the possibility of "many, many drunk people" in the sell-out crowd, Watt or Tszyu are taking no chances.
"Our meeting with the security people indicated there will be very significant numbers, more than we've seen in America," said Watt.
"There will be three police squads of 20 per squad and there will be 80 security staff inside the venue."
Both fighters have already started their preparation, with Tszyu kicking off proceedings with a public trianing session, which included four rounds of sparring with top middleweight Sam Soliman.
And although he is not one for making boasts or trading insults with his opponents, the Russian-born champion labelled Hatton 'predictable' and insisted he has far too much variety for the Mancunian to deal with.
"He is a very tough guy," he said. "The good thing about him is he is going to be predictable for me. I know exactly what I can expect from him.
"He's going to put pressure on me from the first round, but he doesn't know what I am going to do.
"That's what is going to be difficult for him, because he doesn't know what he's going to face. I know. I'm one step ahead of him."
But with the fight, the biggest in Britain, 45 days away, Hatton is matching the champion so far.
After blowing up during a winter holiday in the Carribean, he came home to start his training camp a month earlier than normal, and has already shed the excess weight.
And this week he began his own sparring schedule, although where Tszyu has been working out with compatriot Soliman, the IBF's number one contender at middleweight, Hatton is kicking off against his Phoenix Gym stablemates.
"I've started my training a month earlier than normal, which is why I'm in such fantastic shape," he told Sky Sports Friday Fight Night.
"My weight's come right down, and there's still seven weeks until the bout. Everyone has a different body type. I put on a lot of weight between fights, but I have a good neutritionalist, a good trainer, I come from a good camp and the weighjtt just flies off me.
"I start sparring with the lads in the gym. I'll start with four rounds first, easing into it. Then a month before the fight, my specialist sparring partners will be coming in."
