Default did cowardly fighters ruin boxings popularity?

boxing was a very popular sport for decades due to all the true warriors and the best fighting the best. but i would say in the late 90s alot of fighters began to run from there opponents in the ring and run from the best out of the ring. these men would cherry pick easy opponents and never give the fans excitement. i am talking about guys like mayweather roy jones hopkins calzage etc. do you think these fighters killed the popularity of boxing?
