Pretty Funny Article I Came Across.. Enjoy!
I dont know about you guys but I think Rocky balboa (The Italian Stallion) was one of the most over rated boxers of our time!
decided to look back on some of the footage from his fights and struggle to see how he was a 'great' and I cant seem him ever being added to the boxing 'hall of fame'.
Rocky had a series of defeats in his amatuer and semi-pro career, and in some really old footage we can see that he had a very tough televised debut against Spider Rico who many dubbed 'a bum'. Some of the fight may have been called a no contest due to its nature, and indeed a disqualification.
Rocky, by 'freak luck' then got a shot at the unbeatn World Champion Apollo Creed. I agree it was a brave and gutsy performace going the distance with the Count of Montefisto, but you should watch the fight back it is clear to see the ref should have stopped this bout very early on, and Rocky's face seemed to be a mess, thus really jeopardising the health and safety laws governing the sport. The 'Split' decision was a joke, anyone could see Creed won clearly on points, notching up several knock downs, I feel the judges in this fight need to be looked at.
In the rematch, it was evident that Rocky would struggle to pass a medical with the lack of vision in his left eye? Not to mention the fact that the top ranked contenders must have surely been due a fight with Apollo long before Rocky, even a mandatory contest? Having watched the rematch again, it seemed like a fairly 'long count' to me, with the referee almost counting in slow motion! Not to mention that Rocky slipped and should not have been receiving a count at all.
After Rocky had won a '1 million to 1' shot he defended the heavyweight title against a bunch of old has beens, and fighters that looked to me like they were hand picked, keeping Balboa in his new flush lifestyle, I mean names like Big Yank Ball and Mackley Green, simply arent the big names you would expect to fight in that era. When Balboa finally fought someone with a bit of pedigree he was beat again! Losing to James Clubber Lang within three rounds!
In the rematch and under the guidance of a real champ - Apollo Creed, Rocky actually begun to look like a boxer, and this safely seen Rocky exempt revenge and lift the title back from Clubber - who I think was treated unfairly and was due a rematch himself, for a Balboa-Clubber 3rd show down!
It would be fair to say Rocky peaked in his later years, and having watched the fight between himself and the Siberian Express Ivan Drago again, it is clearly his best fight by far, although Ivan Drago had a professional record of one fight, one win?? - And I felt a little uncomfortable with how the media handled this fight, almost suggesting it was the equivalent of the 'cold war' between the leaders and politions of two very large nations, crossing the line between politcs and sport on several occasions.
The fight itself is a little one sided with the big Russian dominating nearly every round, and I had him up by about 7 rounds going into the final round. I also timed the final round in the Drago fight which seemed to last longer than the 3 allocated minutes? In addition it seemed strange to be fighting the full 15 rounds in a non-title fight?
I also think Balboa ducked a rematch with Drago, a rematch that most of the audience wanted to see and would have been worth millions especially with George Washington Duke Promotions!
Rocky has become somewhat of a legend although I fail to see why, he looked too light to be a heavyweight, seemed a little slow, didnt have the best of chins after being knocked down by every opponent he faced, and after a lucky shot and a few dubious refereeing decisions he won the heavyweight title twice.
