To the best of my knowledge, he turned pro & fought just before his 18th birthday..

Can't remember the opponent but he won & went on to win several more before losing out to Archie Moore.. Can't remember if Johnson ever became champ or not, but I don't think so.. Beat most of em though!

With regards, but I wouldn't have a clue on his amateur status...

He started boxing at 18 after meeting billy conn in the army, he use to spar with conn when he was just a novice, conn learned him the basics first, he turned pro later that year. Harold Johnson is teddy atlas favourite fighter

"My father, Phil Johnson, was a boxer. My brother boxed too, but not pro," he said, recalling the days on how he got started in boxing. "I played baseball and I played tackle football up in Manayunk, in Germantown, that***8217;s where I grew up. Where I lived, they called it the Scratch House. It wasn***8217;t a very big place.

"I started boxing at the North Lake Boys Club. I think I was about eight years old. The guy who ran the gym used to be a boxer and he remembered my father. The first time I boxed, he looked at me and said, ***8216;Where did you learn how to fight like that?***8217; I didn***8217;t know what he meant, I thought I did something wrong. I thought I was fighting dirty or something. Then he said, ***8216;You looked good.***8217;

Johnson turned pro in 1946 and won his first 24 bouts before dropping a 10-round decision to Moore in 1949.
