The Girl Who Cut Time aka Toki o kakeru shôjo
Running time: 104 minutes
Directed by: Nobuhiko Obayashi
Starring: Tomoyo Harada
IMDB rating: 6.7
The Girl Who Cut Time tells the story of Tomoyo, who, after an accident in the school science lab, starts to re-live days over again, with only her remembering that it has all happened before.
This is the adaptation of a successful Japanese book
, and that shows in certain ways, as the story seems to have a depth and purpose that the film doesn't quite manage to portray, yet can still be seen in certain parts. TGWCT is perhaps something that would benefit from a second viewing, as the opening scene makes more sense once the mystery of her time travel is solved.
I found the plot a bit too slow-paced for my liking, quite a few scenes were several minutes too long and didn't add anything to the story. The time travel doesn't start until half way through, at which point is seems like it may turn out similar to Groundhog Day, but instead moves further into the hard science genre.
This isn't a bad film, but I didn't really appreciate it until the ending, and even then I felt that the details didn't quite fit together 100%, although that may be due to me simply not understanding certain minor points.
One final note: The lead actress was apparently a successful singer, and this seemingly influenced the film makers, who chose to show her walking around during the end credits, singing a song whilst interacting while some of the other characters. Because of the serious tone of the ending, this seemed out of place and also pretty tacky.
