Marciano's achievements are extra impressive when you look at his dimensions. Not only was he short in height, but his wingspan was short as well.

I think the average person has the same wingspan as his height. Most boxers' wingspans are longer than their height. Even Mike Tyson, who has short arms by boxing standards, has about an average wingspan by regular standards (roughly 71" in both wingspan and height).

Marciano's wingspan is about 4 inches less than his height.

Indeed, Marcaino had lots against him etc Height, Reach and a late start. But still went on to become a ATG Heavyweight and one of the best.

Just makes his achievements that little bit more special.......

Yeah but look at who Tyson was fighting in comparison with their Tale of the Tape.

Tyson was lucky he was thick as a Bull.

Yeah. Once you spar with taller, rangier fighters, you gain more respect for fighters like Tyson, Hatton, Marciano, etc...***** is HARD.

Tyson even outjabbed Tucker, who had half a foot in height and a foot in wingspan on Tyson.

I thought that was impressive as well...shame he went to **** after he left Rooney. Training properly is vital and you need the right trainer.
For a guy that knew boxing history better than anyone, he certainly blew it.
He just couldn't make the "right" decisions needed to stay successful. Age may have had a lot to do with it...especially given the mass-media time period he was in...plus the money and other things. I think Tyson was right though; if Cus had been alive, everything would have been different because Cus would have controlled everything for him and he would have listened.

I'll have to find the quote later, but D'Amato basically said that he {Cus} is succesful when he can make the Fighter a Champion and Independent of him {Cus}.
I'd say the Teacher died before the Student was fully groomed...but who knows.

That's why a fighter like Marciano deserves a lot of credit: He always came in great shape for every fight because he knew he needed to be at his best to win, and when he had enough, he retired and stayed retired.

It just takes so much more energy for a smaller fighter to overcome the bigger obstacles. It's why they burn-out quicker. Small guys have to fight "small," which forces them to move their upper-body so much that they wear down over-time...especially their back. Legs have to be strong as well.
